P8 Z77-v Pro (F1 CPU fan failure)

Anyone experiencing an F1 boot failure from CPU fan?

I'm using the latest Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo with a 4 pin connector connected to the main CPUfan slot. It seems a bit odd since the fan is rotating at or near the speed of the case fans, 600 +/- at idle. CPU idle temp is 27-30 and the fan spins up under load.

Now here's the kicker. It only gives the F1 alert on first boot. Subsequent reboots post normally though fan speed doesn't appear to change. I'm wondering if it's not a software issue. I moved the fan rotation up using Xpert, but still get the initial CPUfan fail F1.

I'm building an identical system for my wife later today and will soon see if the problem repeats. Hoping someone has seen this and knows if it's software related or something else. My 15 day return window ends in a few days and I'd like to know what's up.

go to bios, and change cpu temperature fan settings to IGNORE>

Actually made that change and then stopped thinking maybe that wasn't such a good idea.

Kicking fan speed up to 700+ baseline in Xpert does't change that first F1 failure although it produces a safe speed reading in Asus Bios Utility.

Running the latest bios at present 1015 I think it is. We'll see what happens. My wife's system does it too at an older bios.

Thanks :)

Changes in Xpert wouldn't help with a bios error because Fan Xpert settings aren't applied until it loads (aka after you are on your desktop).

I had this error for the first time on my Maximus V Gene this morning. The only real difference this morning is it was much cooler than it has been. My guess is that the F1 bios warning is related to the low speed limit that you can set in bios. You could either lower the limit or use a higher fan speed in bios (your xpert settings should over-ride bios when it loads). Or you can use ignore as you currently are.

My Maximus V Gene is running my cpu fans at slightly over 600rpm out of the box. The Chasis fans out of the box are actually under default low speed warning (they run just under 600rpm).

These exact same fans on my Asus P9X79 Pro ... run around 850rpm out of the box.

I'm not really sure why the Z77 board sets the speed so much lower by default. I can take the fan out and put it back in my X79 build and it returns to its normal speed there.

I had the same problem and tech support solution on ASUS was to ignore it in bios.
My temps are comfortable for me and that is all I care about. So low speed ignore is fine

This bios setting does nothing except warn you about a possible fan failure. You can safely set it to ignore or if you do want some kind of warning just set it to 200rpm.

If you use Fan XPert this bios warning is superfluous since Fan Xpert disables the bios fan control and comes with it's own warning (which I haven't yet found out how to disable).

You can also set the start speed at a higher rate to eliminate the warning. I always find it interesting that my Asus board in the summer time never comes up with an error but when it starts to get cold, the room temp drops which lowers the fan starting speed at boot up and gives me an error.

You could replace the fan if it has you worried.
But that may not be your problem at first.
I would hit the bios and check your fan header settings.
It could be too low to start the fan (though it shouldn't)
Or it might just be a build up of dust that is stopping the fan from starting.
Also check for any bios updates which may address the fan's operation.
Here are some alternatives: http://www.***********/questions/error-cpu-fan-appears-during-start

Im bumping this post cause im having the same problem so no need to open a new one.

Hello Rvenger

Can you please help?

Regarding this post:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2246956

Im having the same problem, got an asus p8z68 and the same fan cooler master evo 212 plus.

Installed it on July no issues, winter arrived to Mexico City in October and suddenly bang cpu fan error, i reseted the cmos and for a few weeks i didn't have the issue.

Yesterday was the coldest day here in Mexico city and today in the morning i turned on the PC and bang! cpu fan error!

Why this things happen? i mean here obviously is NOT snowing, the lowest has been 9oC.

Does the asus mobos have temperature sensors?

Today i changed my cpu fan detection in Bios from 600rpm to 500rpm hoping this doesn't happen again tomorrow morning.

Why cold temperature has this effect on asus' mobos? i though cold was good for computers.

Cheers!

I have a different problem with same motherboard so thought post here for feedback. I am getting the message that cpu fan is 0 but while able to disable message in BIOS it still showing when running windows 7 as I use the AI Suite II software. What happened on my system I attached the power connector to the wrong connector so that why I am getting error. I setup bios to bypass the fan message but still showing in suite. I dont want to open case to change connector on motherboard. Any way to disable suite messages.

Well, everyone is coming to this thread with their ASUS Z68-or-later fan-header problems, so here I am.

Actually, I think I can test this very soon this evening. The P8Z68-V-Pro motherboard has CPU_FAN, CPU_OPT_FAN, CHA_FAN1, CHA_FAN2 and PWR_FAN plugs. There is apparently enough power to run 1.00A fans on each of these ports. The CPU_FAN, OPT_FAN and CHA_FAN1 all provide good thermal control of the fans.

When I built the machine, I was having problems with an AeroCool fan hooked up to CHA-FAN2. I think even then, it was reporting oddball values for the fan speed -- variously 458RPM, then ~221,000 RPM. I had moved the fan plug to the PWR_FAN port, where it reported about 900RPM.

Doing some fan maintenance and replacement today, I decided to move the fan-plug back to CHA-FAN2, and was reminded of the old problem. Anyone every have a quirk like this? I'm going to put another fan on the port tonight and see if it does the same thing.

If it's the motherboard, I suppose I can live without CHA_FAN2 . . . .

EDIT: NOw I see that the answer may be in the behavior of that same fan. It was working fine on PWR_FAN. So -- yeah -- "bad fan port" or fan-monitoring. P-I_T_A!!
