Hey, I recently bought the Asus P6X58D-E motherboard for my i7 930 system with 6GB Corsair 1333 RAM, MSI 460GTX, 1GB, Corsair 650HXUK PSU etc. Here is what happened: before I assembled everything in the case I've done a barebone test. I put the mobo on its box, placed the CPU, graphics card and RAM into their slots and then I turned the system on. I let it run for like 15 secs and it seemed that everything was going good. After this I assembled the whole thing into the PC case with my 2 HDDs and 1 SSD + DVD ROM. Here comes the sad part: when I turned the comp on, after like 3 seconds I could sense a small spark from the mobo and a horrible smell hit me as well. I immediatly pulled the power cable from the PSU and I could see a burnt area near where the Sata 6gbs connectors are. I think the mobo might have short circuited by the case because nothing else makes sense at this moment. I still have DOA on all of the components as I am afraid the mobo might have damaged something else(fingers crossed)during its demise. I would like to know what you guys think about why the mobo fried and if I'm going to have trouble with warranty etc. Again: I still have DOA so they would have to change anything that might have gotten damaged during assembly ...right? I already asked the company I bought the components from for an RMA for the mobo and also to let me send everything back and have them assemble + test the whole thing because this is too risky. Thanks and sorry for horrible post, I'm writing from a crappy phone as this is urgent.

sounds like the mobo shorted out to the case, possibly a screw or other metal object got stuck between the board and the case during assembly.

They will have to cover it for RMA only if it is proven to be a manufactorer defect. They do not and probably will not cover it if it was user error during install.

Yes, I think it was my fault although luckily Scan Computers provides Scansure insurance on your products, meaning that for 28 days from purchase if you damage an item while assembling it (not including stepping on it or bending the product) Scan Computers will replace it. It costs a bit more to get this insurance but it is very well worth it.

I've sent all of the components back because I am afraid the mobo might have damaged something when it fried. So, they will assemble it and test it before shipping it back to me.

It is a very annoying situation but it's basically a waiting game :\ at least I'll get the PC sooner or later.
