P6x58D-E and 12g [2(3x2g)] Corsair DDR3 1600

I picked up a P6x58D-E to run with a i7 960 with two kits of 3x2GB DDR3 TR3X6G1600C8DG. I already purchased and THEN noticed it wasn't "certified" to run both kits in triple channel.

Anyone try to run this using all six dimms? Should I even try? Or should I just return to Newegg pay the fee and get something else?

Thanks in advance.

Check the sticker on the modules in each kit. If they are all the revision #, then they "should" work. You probably won't be able to use the XMP profile if you were intending to as the QPI voltage is going to be a bit low for 6 modules. But, you might be able to, you'll simply have to test and see. If stock does not work, try the 1.35v - 1.45v range.

If they are not the same revision, they may still work but your chances are slightly less. You can try them in this case but I'd suggest an RMA and trade for a 12GB prematched kit.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm looking at the numbers printed on the memory and they are the same on all six, v7.1, 1.65v,....10191997 (sn?).

I'm really tempted to try it.

What is newegg's policy on opened ram?

Dropping the voltage down to 1.35v - 1.45v range, how much is that going to slow the memory down?

Don't get confused with VDIMM.

Yellowbeard
is referring to the QPI voltage.

So it will run at 1600 but with slower latencies, yes?

Sorry I'm a noob. I'm not really an OCer despite getting OCing RAM.... is this something I should be playing with?

You'll need to ask Newegg about their policy.

Since you are running 6 modules, there is no guarantee that your CPU/IMC can run them at any speed past 1066. You'll simply have to experiment with the frequencies yourself and test for stability. You "should" be able to get 1600 @ CAS8 but you may have to tweak the memory controller voltage I noted above. The actual memory voltage needs to be 1.65v.

I stuck them all in and it worked beautifully! Out of the box I set it to 1600 and the timing defaulted to 9-9-9-20. So awesome! Thanks guys!

I wanted to actually play some more and get that down to 8-8-8 but I seem to have two more problems, I have the Corsair 8000D case, which is beautiful but one of my SATA connecters for the hot swap bay fell off. Saddens me but thats gotta go back. This case is otherwise amazing!

The other problem is the Marvell Sata 6g controller is crap. The harddrives work when I switch them over to the Intel, but when I try to do anything with the drives connected to Marvell, they "dissapear", format and OS installation both fail. I have no idea whats up with that. To be sure it wasn't the memory I removed a set and defaulted the speed back down to 1066.

So.... if anything the memory was actually the strongest part of my setup so far.

Thanks for the feedback!!

Update: Got the marvell working, and I put the RAM back up to 1600. It allowed me to access the XMP and set it to 8-8-8-24. And its running solid! Didn't have to adjust any voltages.

Good news on the memory and I'm very sorry you had an issue with your back plane. Fill out the form linked below and we'll send you a replacement.

You rock! Looks like just four screws are holding the one interface on. That is such a better option than returning the whole case. I am blown away by the awesomeness of this case btw.

Thank you!

Just as a follow up, first off, I've been busy as heck with work, seminars....sorry in the delay.

I received the replacement part from Corsair's customer service (what feels like months ago) and it works beautifully! Just wanted to make a follow up post saying: yes, Corsair does in fact stand by their product and their customer service was impeccable in this matter. And I wanted to extend a thanks to Yellowbeard for making this all happen.
