If I clear the cmos, I can boot and enter the bios. Upon changing anything within the bios, machine shuts off and is dead. Have tried this several times.

I've tried 2 different sets of memory, 2 ps units...the stupid thing will just not stay powered on after you enter the bios..

I thought the chip might be going into thermal shutdown, but after 3 heatsinks...none of which really even get warm, I'm going to try another bios...I just hope it will stay up long enough.

I'm going to attempt a Crash Bios recovery with a new bios revision, but I don't feel good about this.

It didn't and now it's just hosed. This is my second attempt at an i7 build, the first being a UD4R board...and it just had issues booting. As strange as this seems, you can't make it up. Two totally different systems, and the net outcome is still the same...I have yet to get an i7 system up and running.

I'm hoping the egg can cross ship the parts to me...I've been trying this for almost two weeks now...it's getting painful.

Well...I figured it out...it was a thermal protection thing. I finally gave it one more try with the stock cooler and some Artic Silver...and now I'm in windows.

Don't understand why both the TRUE and the Noctura didn't work...but upon further inspection it appears that the cpu is not above the locking mechanism...this could rule out any lapping and might force me into water.

Awesome! Glad you got it figured out! Congrats on getting into windows. There are soo many horror storries about i7 builds as there are success stories... I think I'm going to keep holding off until D0 and more importantly "better boards"

It died this morning. The temp here has risen yet again and the thing dies on it's way into windows. I think the chip is cooked...going back.

Another thing I noticed is that the chip is almost flush with the top of the socket. When I pulled off the stock sink, I could see that good contact was being made...although this only covered about 60% of the chip.

So I added a little more goop and mounted the Ultra 120 Extreme...hardly any contack, and the Noctura was the exact same way. I don't know if this is a board issue with the socket, or if in making the new heat sinks, the base has become so large it touches the socket (which they do on this install).
