I have an older P5W-DH I'm upgrading to an E8400 from a Pentium D 820. It has 2 SATA disk drives.
I flashed the BIOS to 2602, plugged in an E8400, and presto - nothing.
Replaced old CPU - fine. Back to 8400 - no video, nothing.
Here's what I had to do:
1) Install an E6400. Worked fine.
2) Go into BIOS, CPU config, disable Intel Speed Step.
3) Inserted E8400. Bios starts up now, but - hangs on message
about JMicron controller looking for disk drives.
4) Hit reset button. No luck - video went blank and that was it.
5) Power off, wait, turn it back on. Bios comes up with message - overclock failure.
6) Set bus speed down to 300 MHz from 333 which BIOS had automatically set for E8400.
7) Reboot. No message about overclock, but still hangs on JMicron.
8) Reboot. Set IDE Configuraton to AHCI (it was set to Standard IDE).
9) No more JMicron hang - starts to boot Windows - immediately resets and reboots back into BIOS.
10) Set IDE config back to Standard (I had to do this two-step before, when first setting up the machine with the Pentium D 820).
11) Machine now works fine, boots into Windows. Two copies of Prime95 run fine for many minutes. However - CPU temp indicates 60 C. When the E6400 was in there, it sat at around 45 C under this full load. Many users report temps showing about 15 C higher than expected.
12) Reconfigure SpeedFan 15 C higher than it was for E6400 - set desired temp to 50 C and warning at 70 C. When idling SpeedFan shows the temp as 38 C.
Ok, E8400 is now working on P5W DH - but, only at 2.7 GHz. Will have to experiment to see how I can get the bus speed up to the rated 333 MHz so I can get 3.0 GHz.
Conclusion - GET AN E6850!
