Hi all,

Hopefully someone will know this.

In order to remove the cover on the P5W DH board northbridge heatsink (the part with the Digital Home logo on it), do I need to remove the entire northbridge/MOFSET heatsink or can I detach it straight out?

I want to put a small 40x40mm fan on it instead.

Thanks all,

I don't know that motherboard but I just want to say quickly that I've replaced northbridge chipset coolers before by pinching the plastic pins on the back with my nails (push on one end and pinch on the other). In any case, I've used a 40mm fan used on a Coolermaster northbridge chipset cooler. Then I used a 2"x6/32 or something like that bolt on it to attach the fan to a Zalman NB47J heatsink.

Right but I don't want to go through all the fuss of taking the motherboard out and then back in again. From what I've found so far it's only held on with some adhesive so should break off if I insert a knife blade in between the heatsink and cover (left and right side). I'll try it later tonight.

I have that mobo, And it is clipped in from the front w/ two metal spring things. I think all you have to do is unclip those and then take a knife to it like you were talking about.

don't have this mobo, but I have one of their skt 939 mobos. I was able to peel off the cover on the northbridge by simply lifting the edge of the plate with gentle, steady pressure. Mine came off a little bent. I supposed you could heat it up 1st with a hairdryer to loosen the adhesive.

@ OP:
I have done exactly what you are proposing to do to my Asus P5W-DH. You do NOT have to remove the motherboard from the case to do this, nor do you have to remove the Northbridge cooler/heatpipe system. The cover is simply a thin and flimsy piece of cheap metal that is weakly glued onto either side of the NB cooler. Simply get some pliers or use your fingers, grab it at the bottom edge, and pull up. I recommend pushing down on the top so that you don't break the clamps. You will bend and mangle the cover in this process, but it does improve airflow over the NB.

I did this last night and it works.

Now I just need to find a 40mm fan with 40mm grill for it.

How do you guys recommend attaching the fan to the existing NB heatsink? Screws or should I use these rubber vibration mountings instead?

Thanks.

Is that what you're talking about?

Anyway, it's a Canadian link but you can use the tigerdirect.COM as well.

Yes something like this except only the fan and I want to screw/fasten the new 40mm fan onto the existing heatsink. I suppose some longer screws would do the job by digging into the NB heatsink near its base where the gaps between fins are smaller.
