p5ld2 Wolfdale Support????

I currently have an e6300 in a p5ld2 motherboard... Physically an e5200 will fit in my motherboard. From everything I gather online, my motherboard doesn't support the 45 nm core2duo's. The higher multiplier of an e5200 (80 CDN at the moment) would be greatly appreciated, as my 7x multiplier on my e6300 is starting to show its age at 2.8ghz....

My question is this.....Is it possible to pop in a wolfdale in my p5ld2???

Thanks

on a side note - (I currently have a barton2500XP in a ecs k7s5a (unsuppported cpu) and it works fine (although it shows up as a Duron in the BIOS). So from past experience I do know its possible to run unsupported cpus in some motherboards...)

Your question is valid, but part of asus website is down right now. There was no "cpu support" section listed for your board, but you might check back later. The last bios update was in Sept, so it may be possible to run your e5200. Asus is still the best about updating older motherboards.

From Intel support:

'Due to the voltage load lines of the 45nm E7000 and E8000 series Intel processors, the 945 series of chipsets is NOT supported. Possible damage may occur, and therefor any use of these processors on said chipsets would immediatly void the processor warranty and/or mainboard warranty.'

Thanks for the replies.. I've been over most of that info and was mostly just hoping that someone out there had managed to shoehorn a wolfdale in there.

It is an old board but is rock solid stable with a 400 mhz FSB. The 1950xt is an easier option for me to upgrade, yet the GPU route will cost alot more than a e5200..

Thanks again.

Cpu-z reports my motherboard as having the the "A2" revision. I'm now tempted again to crack the case off and pop the e5200 in... I just dont want this to go up in flames (not literally) like my last attempts at pin modding and pencil modding (EPIC FAILS)..

Thanks tcsenter I may just jump..

Failblog.org!

Good luck DonPedros--do you have another machine you can post from if the magic smoke puffs out of your e5200?

I have 5 computers in my house, but if this didn't work it would knock out the 2 best... The e5200 is from my wife's and she wouldn't be happy if we cant play BF2 anymore.. I may wait until I build a new media center, I'll put my e6300 in there and grab a low binned wolfdale for a replacement.

I haven't smelled the magic smoke since I started an athlon T-bird without the HS/Fan on correctly. That was almost a decade ago..

Ah, the old Athlon XP and the VIA KT 266 chipset--the one with all the bonus features, like unpredictable incompatibilities with various standard components--silent soundcards, dark displays--endless fun!

Good luck!

This board is quite old, having been released in 2005. Only PCB 2.01 (or later) supports Core 2 Duo. If your PCB version is older than 2.01, I wouldn't bother. In either case, BIOS CPU support hasn't been updated since 08/2007, which predates 45nm and E5xxx models by over a year.

Tcsenter, Asus actually released two new bios revisions this year.. Im currently using the P5LD2 BIOS 2002, which was released 2009/09/04. They are listed as Beta at ASus website but nonetheless they were released recently. Also Asus's page (http://asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=gD1ljCkUWy1Y3yMG) for the P5ld2 says - "This motherboard supports the latest Intel® Core?2 processors in LGA775 package. With new Intel® Core? microarchitecture technology and 1066 / 800 MHz FSB, Intel® Core?2 processor is one of the most powerful and energy efficient CPU in the world."

Considering I'm currently running my FSB at 400 (effective 1600 mhz) I'm thinking it has more than enough juice to power a less hungry wolfdale. If its just a matter of the bios not recognizing it than and displaying it as "UnknownCore2" then I'm fine with that..

If its a matter of the magic smoke that we previously discussed than no thanks..

Hey Don Pedro, quick note:

I'm thinking it has more than enough juice to power a less hungry wolfdale.

I think THAT is the problem: too high a voltage, too much current.

The more efficient CPUs have to have LOWER voltage--lower than that old chipset can provide?

And neither of them add support for new/different processors over the BIOS from 08/2007, which is what I stated.

Also Asus's page (http://asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=gD1ljCkUWy1Y3yMG) for the P5ld2 says - "This motherboard supports the latest Intel® Core?2 processors in LGA775 package. And immediately to the right of the board photo it reads:

Only PCB R2.0 (or higher) support Intel® Core?2 processor

Strange that I get the feeling I'm repeating myself.

You are repeating yourself, extremely abrasively if I'm not mistaken. I mentioned the new BIOS was beta so you can tone her down a bit there cowboy. Also we've established I have the A2 which Asus is implying supports "all the latest Core2 cpus".

As a member with 13000+ posts I would expect a bit more manners from someone so established around here..

Regardless thanks all for the help, seems like this thread can be closed.

Actually I stated A2 is the chipset revision for 945GC that supports 45nm. You have the A2 revision of the original 945G, most of which have never supported 45nm.

"P5LD2 is the older Intel 945G chipset, prior to the latest "A2" revision that Intel named 945GC. " ----- Your own wording implies the 945GC is an "A2" revision of a 945G..

Regardless.. you've been somewhat of a helpful prick ... SO thanks again..

Underhanded compliments for underhanded help, don't ya think that seems fair??
