So my neighbors have a fire upstairs while I'm in the middle of installing water cooling...Long story short...Parts all layed out on the floor...Firemen tramping around...My mobo died. Get renters insurance!

I ordered a Asus P5k3 (ddr3 support) today and am looking for some memory.

I put off upgrading from S478 as long as I could knowing DDR3 was coming and quad core would be mainstream soon. The side effect is I have no idea about current mem speeds and types. And what the subsequent overclock potentional of the varying speeds would be.

What do you guys recommend?

I'd say just get the smallest and cheapest possible amount of RAM you can live with for the next year or so.
DDR3 price is like 3 or 4 times of that of the DDR2 nowadays, and I think most people will agree that it will not become mainstream anytime soon. Especially given that AMD doesn't seem to offer support for DDR3 anytime soon either.

Kingston might be a good bet for the time being. But honestly adopting DDR3 right now doesn't seem to be the smartest move there is.
Prices will go down, but I don't think anyone know when DDR3 prices will go down, not to mention it's kinda hard to get those sticks anywhere.

Thanks for the reply.

Prob should have waited on the ddr3 mobo but I didn't want to go ddr2 and in 6-12mo feel like upgrading again.

I will take your advice on the ddr3 though since I just blew 500$ on a E6600 and the P5k and still dont have a graphics card or mem.

the only problem with getting ddr3 now is that ddr3 is only going to get faster as time passes...

is there ANYWAY you can return the p5k3 and get the p5k instead?

ddr2 prices are just too cheap to pass it up.

yes, you are right that you might have to upgrade later but i just don't think it's worth the price premium to get ddr3...

Newegg carries a 2 gig kit of wintec ddr2 667 for $58 shipped. I would look into that.
