I just built a new PC with an ASUS P5K-E WiFi AP. It has 6 USB ports in the back, and 2 in the front. Obviously, being a new card, all of these ports are USB 2.0. But when I plugged my iPod into a back USB port last night, Windows said the device would go faster if plugged into a USB 2.0 port. Sure enough, song transfers were extremely slow. When I plugged it into the front port, I didn't get the 1.1 message and the song transfers were blazing fast. Does anyone know what the source of the problem is?

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate x64.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but, is your sound working ok? I just finished building a new machine with a PK5-E and the on board sound plays for about 10 seconds and then gets choppy. Have you experienced this? BTW, I plugged a scanner, inkjet printer, wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, the cat (jk) and a Creative Zen all into the back, also a multi card reader into the front USB and had no USB 2.0 issues. Did you use the same wire? I've had problems before with some wires on USB 2.0.

Audio driver v5.10.1.6310 10/9/2007
BIOS is v0906 12/07/2007
Board is rev1.02G
XP Pro SP2+++
2GB Corsair 800Mhz DDR2

Nevermind the machine in my sig, it's cooked. OC'ing did it in. My oc'ing :( days are over since this machine this rebuild has to last me a while.

thanks,
John

You checked the bios I take it? There's USB options there.

For the sound choppy issues, if your mouse or video playback or etc. is also freezing momentarily, it may be due to...

the eSATA JMicron drivers you've used. Update your drivers. Having your OS run off of eSata (JMicron) may also be causing the problem.

I think I am 2 BIOS releases behind but the ASUS site indicates the recent updates are for CPU support and some minor memory adjustments. I am a little nervous about updating BIOS after reading some others who bricked their mobo's using the Windows updater. I am not using eSATA at all.

However, my boot drive is IDE which I think is on the Jmicron controller and I have 4 drives on the Intel RAID controller. The boot drive is slave and my DVD drive is master on the IDE. I am using an 80 wire cable. I compared the version number on the ASUS site to mine and they are the same 1.17.15.0 however mine was released 3/24/07 and theirs was released on 9/27/07. Not sure what to make of that. Thoughts?

thanks,
John

P.S. My mouse was choppy until I recharged the batteries. :)

Maybe you didnot install all drivers (mobo drivers).
When I reinstall windows XP I get that kind of message until I install all mobo drivers

DO NOT USE the windows updater... just put the bios on a usb drive and update with EZ-Flash from within the BIOS... I've bricked my P5WDH a couple times using the windows updater.... but with EZ-Flash, it's worked every time. I have a couple P5K-E, and i've gone through the bios with EZ-flash and it's worked flawlessly everytime.

shamans was correct about the source of the choppy audio issue. The ASUS site doesn't have the most recent driver. In fact it's almost a year old. I went directly to the JMicron site http://www.jmicron.com/Driver.htm and downloaded and installed the current XP version JMB36X_WinDrv_WHQL_R1.17.32WHQL.zip from their FTP site: ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/jmb36x/Win2k_xp_Vista .

Now audio and video playback is completely smooth!

thanks Shamans!

Hopefully this thread isn't dead yet, cause i don't wanna get flamed for posting another one, but I updated to the latest BIOS AND had checked if USB2 was enabled in BIOS -- it always had been by default. Still having the problem.

What else do you have plugged into the back USB ports? I know on my last mobo, depending on what port I had something plugged into, it would sometimes fail to work properly or even be recognized. Have you tried all the back ports to see if any of them do run at the expected USB 2.0?

It's just a guess on my part but USB ports seem to run in pairs so if you have a USB 1.1 device plugged in, maybe it drops the other port in the pair to USB 1.1.

What is your Power Plan in the OS? Do you often put your system to Sleep?

Oh and what kind of iPod? Did you check if there is any new firmware?

Hang on, you are saying the front ports you are using (from your case?) are listing as 1.1?

If you have an older case this would mean the usb ports part of the case are phsyically 1.1.

I've got no problems using my USB ports on Thermaltake Tsunami

depends on the windows and on the release date.

Most of the newer updated versions have usb2.0 drivers built in that will work on almost any platform. These are generic drivers.

If your windows is like a pre sp1 release, then no you dont have the drivers and need to install your board chipset drivers.

Then check the cable, sometimes the cable plays a big role. If the cable is bad, the board will register as usb1.0.

If you already did all of that and your still getting usb1.0, then its in bios. You need to set it at hi-speed and not full speed. Full speed is standard, high speed is the 2.0

And lastly if you have all this done and it still doesnt work, then your board is borked, and my magic crystal ball is telling me your in for an RMA. :T [this last issue is notorious on laptops when the planer board, aka motherboard dies from high heat and usage]
