I'm not sure if my motherboard is defective...

I need someone to test and see if the optical port lights up as soon as the motherboard powers on...or if it lights up after you boot into windows (either xp or vista).

 
The port is illuminated after the OS has loaded. Don't know if it makes a difference, but have you configured your system to use the optical out (e.g.: default playback device)?
