Does anyone have this combination in working order? I'm on my second board and second card and still no luck...

Full Details:

If anyone can help me, I would be hugely appreciative :).

I am building two identical systems based off the following components:

1) P5K Deluxe (P35 chipset)
2) E6700 Core 2 Duo
3) EVGA 8800GTS 640 MB
4) ThermalTake 850W
5) Corsair Twin2x 2x1GB 6400C4

And eventually (when I can get the above to work) - I'll be adding a PCI-Express 3ware RAID 10 card with 4 500GB Seagate 7200.10 drives.

Everything is brand new. I put the first system together and booted. It would boot, things would be going on (drive clicks, keyboard flashes), but no video display. After 3 or 4 times trying to source (click the source button on the monitor) the Samsung flat panel DVI monitor, I actually got to view the post - it read that overclocking had failed and then would proceed with the rest of the post, it would hang after only a minute or two so I could only interact with the bios to review settings for short periods of time. After a hang I would disconnect power and leave it for a full minute before it would boot again.

I tried different power supplies, RAM, etc. Nothing would change the behaivior. Then it stopped having video output again. After numerous reboots I finally got a visible post and entered the bios, went to look on my other PC for a few things to try and when I came back the machine was off. I tried to reboot, and the lights flickered when I pressed the power button - seems like the board finally shorted itself out. It's dead - nothing happens besides the flicker the house lights with just the CPU on the board.

On to the second set of components...

I put this machine together step by step, CPU + RAM - booted fine, added Video card and got the post /video output problem again - but only once. It seemed to be working. I added a floppy drive and nothing - no boot, took out the floppy drive - no boot, removed everything and started over - booted again finally. Then when trying to boot again, the switch wouldn't work - nothing... tried a different switch - nothing... tried a different power supply - it worked. Then the second boot, the same thing - nothing happens when you push the switch. I switched back to the original power supply - everything booted again. Figured out that I can get one boot which after 1-2 minutes the machine will hang, then I have to disconnect power and wait 1 minute.

Things I've tried/double checked:

1) Yes, the extra 12V connector is in the motherboard.
2) Yes, all the power plugs are seated properly
3) Yes, the video card has enough Amps (30 Amps on the 12V rail) and yes, it's got power
4) No, haven't been able to upgrade the bios to 311 as I can't get an interactive machine long enough or a floppy drive connected
5) Yes, I've tried clearing the cmos
6) Yes, I've tried different powersupplies including different models and brands
7) Yes, I've swapped the memory and also tried only one stick
8) Yes, I've tried a different video card

I really feel like I must be doing something wrong, but I've built many computers and I just can't figure out what's going on in this case. The odds of getting multiple bad motherboards seems like a long shot.

Any ideas or suggestions? - I'll keep this thread going until posted resolution or I end up buying something else completely.

thanks in advance...

Reset your BIOS by taking the battery out, after the power cord in the back is unplugged for 30 secs or so.

Then once you get the PC booted, make sure you are supplying enough voltage to the RAM as per spec. Default DDR2 voltage is 1.8v but sometimes you need more for faster RAM.

Good luck.

Not sure what to say yet, however we both have very close systems. So far I have had very little issues with mine and nothing with the video. I am usign the GTS 320 card, however that should not make a difference.

What slot are you using for the video card?

thanks for the replies.

I got the PC booting consistently using an older pci-express 7900 card and got the RAID card working so I have XP installed. I'm putting the graphics card in the blue slot closest to the CPU. I am going to try the RAM voltage idea first this evening and flash the bios to 311 and then we'll see.

appreciate the ideas,
Cheers!

Some good news! Resetting the bios and then setting the RAM voltage to 2.1volts solved the problem. The ram isn't getting too hot and the machine ran fan all evening. I installed WOW and got great fps but the video card was pretty bored, even with maxed out settings at 1600x1200. Time to install something more challenging.

I'm planning to do the BIOS upgrade tomorrow - have heard mixed success of doing this so I was curious for feedback - if I'm planning to overclock is there any reason to upgrade the bios or since everything is working, should I stick to the rule of "if it's not broken..."

Thoughts?

Will do a burn-in test tomorrow and post results. Thanks for the helpful ideas. Also, side note - thus far I have been very impressed with the 3ware 9650SE-4LPML PCI Express RAID controller in this set up - raid 10 array has performed well.

I picked up replacement parts ofr the second build and couldn't resist getting an 8800GTX so will prob give that a try in the second system.

thanks again,...

It was definitely the RAM voltage by the sounds of it. Performance RAM often needs more than 1.8V to run, although some can boot ok at 1.8V. My OCZ managed to boot with both sticks in at 1.8V (although I changed it to 2.1V right away to avoid any problems).

For BIOS, check the other P5K threads. With a new board, new BIOS revisions often add stability/features around overclocking so it's worth a shot. With my P5B-D I upgraded to the latest BIOS out when I built it in March 2007, but haven't bothered upgrading to the new one because everything is working the way I want and I'm not trying to push an OC.

and if all else fails, try booting with just one stick of ram first.

I've got this combo and mine working fine. Hate to hear you had so many problems.

Ok, I'm beginning to think the P5K Deluxe may have a significant problem in the board. I've had one completely die on me and now the second will no longer post or restarts after booting with 10-15 seconds. I have cleared the cmos, reseated everything, disconnect every plug and let be for a few hours, and nothing. I've tried the original low end card that worked before and nothing. I also have seen on other posts people reporting similar problems.

I had originally hoped to overclock these systems, but at this rate, I'd rather just have something stable. Can someone recommend a stable/reliable board for an E6700. I'm done with these new ASUS boards...

thanks for the replies, they encouraged me to press on. I picked up two P5K-E versions of the board and everything, for the most part, worked perfectly. I'm guessing I got a bad batch of boards from Frys as three of the P5K Deluxe boards all failed.

Systems are up and running - going to stress them this evening.

Cheers and thanks for the help...

May be just a bad board or weak power supply. What kind of core temps are you getting? What is your cpu?? Interesting thing that I found on this board is that the voltage is a little quirky. If I set it at 1.400vcore, it will give me 1.36v according to hardware monitor in bios. Under load it will drop even more. what I would do first is re-seat the memory and just run it at stock speeds in AUTO. Mine has been running great since I put it together last Friday.....I got lucky I guess.

I'd call asus tech support, even if you have to wait a few minutes. They might answer an email, but calling them direct might be faster. I'd ask them what memory is recommended. Some p35 boards recommend ddr3.
