This may or may not work for you - it solved my problem completely. I posted this in the P5B thread, but it may get lost in there.
f you are having audio issues (crackling, popping, etc.) check to make sure that your drives are running using DMA. There seems to be a problem with these 965 boards, where the ports go into PIO mode after some time.
I checked mine & sure enough my boot drive was running in PIO mode - as soon as I changed it, my audio problems went away.
PS - There is a handy little VBS script on this page that resets all your drives back to DMA
