P5B and Antec PSU compatible?

I've just assembled a P5B MB with an E6700 which won't POST.

After powering up, Beep, then ASUS screen comes up, then BIOS Version screen comes up, no keyboard action works (can't make "del" happen) and the BIOS screen shows my boot option as my only IDE drive, a DVD ROM optical. After a few seconds a continuous beeping starts and I shut it off.

ASUS support said (as always) check for shorts, tape the standoffs and use fiber washers, etc. and then when I told them I was using the Antec Neo HE 550 psu he said it wouldn't work because the MB needed -5v which the PSU can't supply.

But he was in such a hurry and listed so many possibilities I'm still wondering what is truly wrong.

Isn't -5volts and old requirement? I can't find any supplies that list this voltage capability.

However the diagram of the power supply connector in the Users Guide shows a -5 volt pin just across from the Power OK pin.

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks

My Antec NeoHE 550 is working absolutely flawlessly with my (Asus P5W-DH Deluxe)+(Intel Core 2 Duo)+(ATi X1900XT)+(etc.) system. According to the motherboard sensors, all rails are at (3.3v) or slightly above (5v,12v) specified voltages.

Thus, I don't think the PSU's lack of a -5V line (It would still have the pin in the ATX connector, even if it doesn't get any power) is the problem.

Thanks for that post. That's sure an interesting point! Both Antec and ASUS support people were adamant that the two were incompatible and I wonder why.

The other thing ASUS stressed was grounding of the MB but I've wondered if that isn't a catchall excuse to keep you from immediately asking for an RMA.

However I'll try and see how it works out of the case and report back tomorrow.

Thanks again for that comment.

I just installed the MB outside the case and it powers up with a single beep, then goes to the ASUS screen, then to a text screen with Optical drive driver version info and in blue letters, offers my dvd rom drive as a boot choice, and then eventually goes to a text screen that says "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert Boot media in selected boot device a press a key".

It would look like it works ok but I'm puzzled why I get no keyboard response. I can't get into the BIOS with the "del" key at all. Keyboard has no effect at all.

I would like to test the PSU but wonder how to get it to turn on outside the case. Doesn't the "Power OK" pin need to get connected or grounded or something. How does one get the power supply to start when outside the case?

Does the lack of keyboard operation mean the MB is probably defective?

Thanks

I'd try F1 for the keyboard, or whatever key is recommended on the post screen. Del doesn't always work. If you're using a usb keyboard, usb may be disabled by default. You may have to use a ps2 keyboard to get into the bios.

what he said, are you using a usb keyboard, and why are you so sure its del to get into bios does it say it in the manual?

I'm using a PS2 keyboard and the manual says to hold down the <Delete> key at Power ON.

However, the keyboard has NO effect on the boot at all.

The manual says one beep can mean either "Keyboard controller error" or "no Master drive detected".

I don't have a hard drive ("master drive") connected yet so that could result in 1 beep but also the keyboard not working suggests that could cause the 1 beep also.

Go figure!
