p55 board + 8gb of ram... which board?

Hello, looking for recommendations for a midrange $150 p55 1156 board that will take 8 gb of ram... and which RAM ?

Just looking for stability and compatibility here, don't care about ram timings or overclocking.

I stopped doing that in the celeron 300a days 🙂

I've tried to use motherboard ram compatibility lists in the past with not much luck... so I'd rather get some first hand experience from you guys.

I built two gigabyte p45 based systems and had issues with incorrect ram timings and voltage on both that caused slow downs and instability (why oh why can't they just use SPD correctly without me manually setting it?)

Took about a year and some bios updates to fix it.

Not really looking to go gigabyte again.

I'm really looking for specific names of boards and ram ... somebody has to be running 8gb p55 system?

Hello there.
See signature.

I've been rather impressed with my cheapo P55-UD3R.

I don't doubt there are better P55 mobos for clocking 8 GB, but i highly doubt there are many, if any, that can compete dollar for dollar.

That said, even i'm not the biggest fan of Gigabyte mobos due to their color [lack of] scheme, & while the BIOS in the P55s is much improved, i still generally prefer Asus BIOSes.

You wanted specifics?

i5 750 @ 4158 MHz (21x198) DDR3-1980 9-9-8-24-74-1N
vcore - 1.375v BIOS
llc - enabled
vtt - 1.23v
pch - 1.05v (stock)
pll - 1.8v (stock)
vdimm - 1.6v
CPU & PCI-e drive strengh - 700/700 mV (stock)

12+ hrs. P95 Blend & LinX max RAM 50 passes stable
i5&

Here are my exact BIOS settings (these values would be similar for all Gigabyte P55 boards).

Now if you really don't want to OC @ all, likely the sub-$125 boards would suffice, but not OCing a P55 is a deadly sin that shalt not commit.
It's too easy to OC...don't deny yourself that pleasure.

Here's my Asus pick:

This seems to do very well; XS has a thread in which i've seen a lot of excellent results posted.

awesome thanks for the detail!

if you got 8gb overclocked rocking, i should have no problems at stock.

At stock everything runs fine @ auto, since any half decent DDR3 kits do not need more than 1.5v @ DDR3-1333.

At stock, there's nothing to it really.

Now if OCing, then 8 GB will limit you somewhat compared to 4 GB, especially with poorer motherboards.
