A relative of mine has a socket 462 p4pe motherboard with a broken spur whatever you call it that prevents him from clamping down the HSF perfectly. He wants to know if it can be removed or not and replaced instead of doing an RMA. He currently is using a plastic zip tie to hold it properly in place. I have never removed the socket and dont have an extra motherboard out to take a close look at and see if it can indeed be removed or is attached in a manner making removal a bad idea. If you know for sure yes or not let me know thank you.

thanks mechBgon but I think that is only for adapting to using an AMD HSF and it fits over the installed cpu and it doesnt answer the question can that cpu socket be pulled off the motherboard and replaced?

I think it does answer the question, because Pentium4 heatsinks attach like this. They don't clip onto lugs on the CPU socket, unless I'm very, very , so there isn't a need to replace the socket. But if there were... I'm pretty sure the answer would be that the task is not something you can do yourself.

Well, that is what I would like verified but I agree I told him that it is not removable although I cant say I ever tried but having looked at a lot of motherboards over the past decade I would defininately bet you cant. However there is a chance you can and the reason I ask is that a person I detest because he says a lot of things he absolutely believes which I know are absolutely wrong and then he wont say he was wrong said it can be simply removed and the part ordered and replaced from Asus website. So, I am asking since I couldnt find the answer via google searching etc. Yeah, I believe he is wrong again.

Hey buddy, you already got a definitive answer (with pics and links!) from a person who could build a
Socket 478/P4 rig in his sleep. :)

If your buddy/friend/alternate personality still doesn't believe it, tell him/her/it/them to fix it their darn selves.

Yes, but I was talking about replacing the actual socket that accepts the cpu pins but it turns out that he is actually talking about replacing the plate posted in the first replay but I need it for socket 478 which I was calling socket 462 which was my mistake.

There is NO WAY you, I, or anyone else can replace an actual CPU socket.

When they make the motherboard, the socket is soldered on by robots. You are talking about four hundred and sixty two individual solder points, all about .5mm apart. Even a neurosurgeon couldn't do more than about a dozen before he would flake out!!

Buy a new board, dude...much faster.

yes, that is what I thought lol. But again he is now talking about the retention bracket so it is a moot point now. He needs that replacement bracket for socket 478 not socket 462 and I dont know if that would work with socket 478 or not but I assume it wont since it doesnt say so... thanks for the help guys.
