P4PE Northbridge heating up?

Hey all. I think I have a heat problem with my P4PE northbridge. My cpu gets up to about 48c under Prime 95 and then the system locks. I don't htink it is the cpu because that is not that warm. Has anyone taken off the heatsink on this board and used any asIII on it? Is it a pain to do? I have never taken a northbridge hs off and I don't want to mess anything up.

Thanks for the help,
PJ

I took mine off and put AS III on it. It is a peice of cake to do. Just push down on the spring mechinism and it comes right off. I have the 2.53 and I am running at around 49 on idle. I jump to around 57 using prime but never had it lock on me. I am also running the default v-core and DDR volts setting with the FPS at 150.

I took mine off and put Artic Alumina on mine. Dont think mines overheating any, just did it for peace of mind or something. Or maybe I was bored?

I run my P4PE at 145Mhz FSB (couldnt hit 150:() with 1.6V. Temp IDLE 37C, Load 44C. Im using an Swiftech MCX4000 with TMD fan. My temps were quite a bit hotter when I was using just a 80MM YS-TECH fan that has a higher CFM rating. Guess those TMD fans really do work well!

How do you attach the heatsink fan? Also have you got a link for the TMD fan, Ctkelly? I am interested in what you are using. I have the Alpha PAL8942 with a YS Tech Rheo fan on it and it seems my temps are a little high.

I have never heard of a TMD fan. I also use a YS tech adjustable rpm fan. Is works nice. My temps are usually about 35-37 idle and 45-47 at load in Prime 95.

Is the ThermalTake Tiger1 any good? Its made specifically for the i845 chipsets and it's only $8 at newegg. I was looking at it and thought it wasn't necessary. But now I'm thinking maybe it is?

TT tiger1 is OK ~ i dont like how it mounts, you might have problems removing the fan for dusting, etc.
i use the stock heatsink ~ 4 screws will hold the fan on there just fine :)
the sunon fan is LOUD ~ the TT fan is whisper quiet ;)

i suggest using the TT fan on the stock heatsink w/arctic silver.

Hmm, what does the stock HS use for thermal compound? the sticker thing? I wonder if the TT Tiger1 dissipates heat better than the stock w/fan combo? One thing I noticed and was happy about, when i got my Alpha pal8942 and run my fan blowin away from the proc, it must pull air from the mobo and across the stock northbridge heatsink cause my Mobo temp dropped significantly.

I ended up ordering the TT kit. I will just use the fan for now. I did take off the heatsink. I was amazed at how little effort it took to get it off. The pink pad underneath did not even look like it had been used. Just a little square on it where the "core" of the northbridge had made an imprint. I do have a question though. I just put asII on that little "core" looking thing. I assume that is all that needed it. For those of you that have this board and have taken off the heatsink, what did you do?

Heres the link. Its actually YS TECH TMD fan. Tip magnetic dedsign I believe. basically, the magnets are on the outside edge of the fan. Its a 70MMx15MM fan. I know the MCX4000 has the proper mounting holes, not sure on others.

Btw, for some goofy reason....my asus probe, sisoft, and bios report this fan turning 10,000 rpms. Which cant be right, its a 5600 rpm fan. Anywho. 36CFM/38DB, not real quiet, but not that annoying delta fan whine either.

YS-TECH Fan at SVCompucycle 9.99

Sorry it took me a while to reply

Edit: Yes, just spread an thin even amount of ASII or Artic Alumina over the small core on your northbridge.

Being cheap and all I just glued on a small fan (similar to a 486) and left it at that. I also put a heatsink on the ICS clock generator chip since that gets hot too.
