P4PE Memory Problem

Hello everyone first time posting on these boards so if I am posting on in wrong place bonk me on the head.

I just picked up P4PE/L (Same as a P4PE without all the extra's) some 512 Meg of Cosair xms 3200 memory and a 2.53Ghz P4. When I went to go install WinXP I was getting random lock ups during the very first part of the install where it goes to load all of the drivers. Finally figured it out that if I changed my memory speed in my bios from auto to 266Mhz everything worked just fine. After that I contacted ASUS and they said that there where problems running PC3200 in the P4PE I didn't think that was right but I went ahead and picked up some Mushkin PC2700 memory. Tried the new PC2700 memory and still experienced the same problem. The board will post just fine, but whenever it tries to load anything it will randomly lockup. When I set the speed to 266Mhz it works perfect. I also swaped out various other parts video cards, hard drives, .etc, but it seems that problem is either with the motherboard or some bios setup. Anyone else run into this problem or have a suggestion on how to fix it?

Hmmm, this is quite strange. I've never heard of any memory issues with the P4PE till now. Perhaps the problem is only with asus boards.

Welcome to the forums!!

I had a very similiar problem. I had my Corsair xms 3200 cas 2 in slot one and I thought it was all fine and dandy. Then I tried someoverclocking and some stability tests. (Prime 95 and memtest) They would both fail very quickly unless I was at 333 or under. I thought I had a bad stick, so I got an RMA. Put my new memory in and it was the same thing!!! For some dumb reason I then stuck it in mem slot #2 and now all is fine! So, I am wondering if there is a problem with the first mem slot. I have another P4PE coming this week and will test it out to see if it was the board or a design. Try your mem in slot 2 and see what happens.

Tried the memory in both slots. Also on a side note when I inserted both the PC2700 and PC3200 memory sticks (Both of which are 512 meg) the board would not even post.

Well tried it again just to be sure in the 2 Dimm slot and it failed on auto and 333mhz just like before. Then just for the heck of it I set the memory speed to 355Mhz. Presto working like a champ. Not for sure what is causing this but I am a lot happier camper now. Thanks for all the advice!
