p4p800-SE Limits For Overclocking

Just got myself a p4p800-se and 512x2 dual channel ddr400 ram to use with my p4 2.4 533fsb. Found out that the ram is not at full speed because of the 533 fbs. Anyway, debating whether to get a 3.0 or 3.2 p4 cpu ( 1M cache ). Wouldn't it be a waste to get a 3.2 p4 considering that the limit for the motherboard is already 3.2 Ghz so can't really get any more juice with overclocking?

No.

The Intel 865 chipset is the limiting factor, but as with any overclocking, it's all luck of the draw. Some go over 250fsb, and others don't. Most 875 chipsets easily do over 275fsb and even some over 300. But good luck find a 478 cpu that can do 300+ fsb. 🙂

I got just shy of 4ghz on a p4p800. Of course that was with a Northwood. I suppose a Prescott might have power issues on a p4p at that speed. Anyone who's done it?

Just overclock your 2.4. You should easily get 166mhz FSB and might even get 200. Once you've found your cpu/fsb max, try tightening ram timings. I'd run 1:1 with the tightest timings I could do if I were you.

My northwood overclocks extremely well on that motherboard. I run it at 2.65ghz (stock 2.0) with a little extra voltage and stock cooling...so I imagine a faster northwood would do even better.

imo ull hardly notice any difference between an overclocked northwood and one thats not oced. some guy mentioned 300fsb? what did u smoke? i had a 2,4northwood w/out HTT with an excellent stepping. Ive never tried to push it to its limit, i stopped at 18x170 = 3Ghz. Now ask me what difference in performance there was? Didnt do much benchmarking, but i couldnt "feel" any difference in performance at all. Ram was 1:1 with 2228 timings.
