P4P800 Problem!

I just built the following system:

CPU - P4 3.0C
MB - Asus P4P800
Case- Antec 1080AMG
Memory - 2 x 512 MB Crucial PC3200XMS
HD - Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB SATA
Video - ATI Radeon 9800 Pro $340

When i boot the system it only stays on for 5-10 seconds then goes off. All fans are spinning up and i see the ASUS screen briefly before everything shuts off. Both power connectors are connected to the mobo (4-pin and 20-pin) and i've made sure the power and reset switches are oriented the right way. Any ideas?

I recommend returning the Asus board for another kind... I had an endless string of problems for about a month or 2 before I finally got a different brand. I also noticed that every Asus P4 board on the shelf had been returned....

My Abit has given me NO trouble.

I would guess at it being a bad mobo, or bad Power supply. Does it post alright? have you tried to enter BIOS while it shows the Asus icon? You can't really see any of the post info with that asus icon up...

I don't get far enough to get into the BIOS. I sometimes get to the blue ASUS splash screen, but usually not even that far.

That's odd my P4P800 is working fine along with countless others, dont return that just yet.

did you try just booting is with just the basics ?

Cpu/Ram/Video card/keyboard.

What timings is your memory set at? The 865/875 chipsets apparently don't like them too aggressive.

You should probably read through the P4P800 thread in the Motherboards section.

My first thought was the S-ATA install. Sounds like the sort of issue I had, but if you can't get into BIOS I suppose that wouldn't help. Second is PSU. I'd have trouble believing a 430W Antec is not enough to run it, it'd have to be faulty.

Well, onto things you can fix without RMA'ing the board or PSU. HSF install could cause that behavior. The fan's spinning, so it'd be a loose HS if anything producing too much CPU heat and the MoBo is shutting the system down to protect it. Another possibility would be to clear the CMOS (remover the battery and move the jumper per the manual). Have you tried Asus tech support? LOL.

CPU fan plugged into the cpu fan header? Maybe it's turning off because it doesn't detect a fan spinning fast enough for the cpu.

Yep, turns out the HSF wasn't quite on tight enough and because of the auto-thermal shutdown, i guess it was over-heating. Tighten it up a bit and all is well. XP installed and everything is running smoothly. Just glad i didn't end up with a dead CPU. 🙂

Thanks for your help!
