My computer is freezing when I run programs that use 100% of the processor's capacity (ie tmpgenc, dvd shrink, cce, etc), but it runs fine otherwise. After cutting off the power supply and starting it back up again, it says "overclocking failed, press f1 to go to bios, press f2 to load default values".

It only takes a few seconds of me running video encoding/rendering programs for it to freeze. How should I go about troubleshooting this? Any help is appreciated.

I guess you mean P4P800 "Deluxe".
What kind of memory do you have?
Have you modified anything in the bios?
Increased FSB or increased VCore or changed the memory timings?

It's an Asus.

I had the deluxe version of that very board for about a month or two. After suffering unending locks up, freezes, and general strange behavior, I got rid of that motherboard for my Abit IC7-G, and haven't had a single lock up or crash since then.

yes, sorry for not specifying. i have the p4p800 deluxe. ocz pc4200 memory. No mods in bios. No increased fsb, vcore or memorytimings.

edit: i disabled the raid controller and onboard audio when i installed the audigy card. other than that, nothing is changed in the bios.

Antec 430w PS. I forgot which slot the audigy is plugged into. I'll check that out later.

Your box should be "factory" stable after you F2 to load default values.

Clear your CMOS by taking out battery and then go to your bios and make sure that you have 200 fsb at 15X multiplier (which is locked).

P4P800's are solid mobos with the 865PE chipsets that accept a wide variety of memory. Your memory and other hardware are fine. It's got to be something with a bios parameter that is causing instability.

What is your CPU temperature under load?
You can download motherboard monitor 5 and install and have it show your CPU and motherboard temperature in your taskbar.

How many memory sticks do you have?
Which slots have you plugged them in?

I have never had an unstable Asus or Abit board, with the exception of bad boards (i move a LOT of PCs).

I have had bad boards (as in crashy without the board having any problems, just a bad chipset/design) from MSI, ECS, Epox, Delta, Amptron.

Ive specifically done about 20 P4P800-D based machines, it sounds like you arent on a fresh format to me. If this isnt the case, id check memory timings, cpu and chipset temps.

finally got to check it, it shows 2 processors, HT is enabled in bios.

I'll try mobo monitor and prime95 to see if i get errors when I get home. Thanks for all of the help so far, guys. :)

Make very sure you have a newer bios w/ this board, earlier bios revisons were stupidly picky about the memory used in the system, only memory I could get to work in a friends P4P800 Dlx was some kingston modules based on Winbond CH5 chips, w/ lax timings, his Corsair XMS went back to NE for some standard CH5 based memory, we also had to up the Vdimm to 2.75 volts to get everything stable untill some later bioses, this board or it's earily revisions and bios's were some of the worst crap Asus has ever produced, although to give them credit they eventualy fixed the issues.
