In WinXP, this device shows up in the Device Manager with question marks and in System Information as a Problem Device and the error code says "the drivers for this device are not installed". I do have this disabled on the MB jumper. How do I get rid of all this? Is there a generic driver to install or do I have to add an SM device to get rid of this?

Search infinst_autol.exe at ASUS website. The same file can also be found at intel.com

Apparently, it updated the Intel 865 chipset device drivers. Maybe there was a bug that didn't delete SM Bus Controller if you had it disabled.

The Infinst... "driver" isn't actually drivers. It's just a collection of identification data, teaching Windows what names to put on the various bits and pieces presented by Intel chipsets.
