Hi,

Sorry if I'm being too persistent, but I have a problem here, and it's not just the motherboard.

I've bought an ASUS P4P800 to upgrade my system.

My rig has a Primary Master HD on which I will install W2K again (slave: a DVD-RW drive), two other CD devices on the secondary IDE port, and two more HDs on the onboard ATA controllers (each HD as master, set alone on his separate channel, since that's the way they work best - don't ask why)

This is exactly the way in which I had my old system set up, except that the IDE controller was an add-on PCI card, not an integrated part of the motherboard.

Since my old motherboard died, I made sort of a botched job the first time I put together the new system, because I needed acces to the primary HD, so I could save all my documents. The system currently has only a video card inside.

Under "Device managers", I kept seeing an "Unknown PCI device" - and could not figure out what it was. No big deal - I'm reformatting anyway.

But now, faced with the task of reformatting and installing everything from scratch, I start wondering what the best procedure is.

P4P800 owners know this - there's a CD-ROM that comes with the mobo, on which you basically have all the USB2, VIA Raid, Sound etc. But this CD is suposed to be used AFTER you install Windows !?

So now, as I'm preparing to reformat, using W2k boot floppies, I wonder if I should install the ATA controller (I made a diskette with the drivers from the ASUS CD) during the W2K installation process (between floppy 2 and 3) OR I should install the controller drivers AFTER Windows setup is complete.

What's the best procedure here?

And, if I see it appearing again, what could that "Unknown PCI device" be? remember, I only have my AGP video card installed in the system...

What do you think?

*edit*

Well, I installed Windows and then used the ASUS CD to set up everything else (USB2, sound, ATA controller, network connector), but I still have that `Unknown PCI device` that drives me nuts - I have no clue what it is, and it can`t be the onboard NIC, `cause it`s installed and working already.

To add insult to injury, I called ASUS tech support yesterday at noon, and they haven`t even bohered to call me back yet. They don`t have a toll-free number, so I already spent at least 30 minutes with their stupid automated menus. The motherboard may be good, but the service is one of the worst I`ve ever had to deal with!

I install all drivers after Windows setup unless I need it during the setup process (ie. RAID drivers). It's probably the USB2 controller that's showing up as Unknown PCI Device I'm guessing, just do an update driver on it and point to your Asus cd.

If you're using the onboard IDE ATA133 connectors (not the VIA connectors), just install Windows and forget about the rest of the drivers. You only have to install IDE drivers during the Windows install if your HDDs are on certain seperate controllers. You can install the Via drivers after Windows has installed.

If you're installing it on the Via controller, then you may need the drivers. Press F6 during the start of the install and stick in your driver disk.

In short, if you can't see your hard drive during the Windows install, you need drivers. If you can, you don't.

I'm guessing your unknown PCI device is your 3Com onboard Gigabit LAN. But if those drivers installed, let us know.

Did you install both the Serial ATA drivers and the Via RAID controller drivers?

I had that problem before and downloaded the Intel Chipset drivers and the unknown device was now recognized. Hope it helps.

I see in your rig that you have a Sound blaster card, did you disable the onboard sound card?

that's probably the pci device you're seeing.

No, I haven't updated the rig on AT, so it still shows the old system...

I did not install the RAID, because I'm not doing a RAID arrangement. Just the ATA.

Since the motherboard is a Deluxe, it could be the firewire - I'll check. How do I know if the Firewire got installed correctly?

Stimpyman, are you talking about the Intel chipset utility from the ASUS CD ?

This might also be something like Firewire or USB2. I run XP in my P4P800 and havne't had any of the issues you mentioned. Have you already installed the Service Packs for W2K and/or drivers for USB2 and Firewire?

Damn it!

It was the Intel Chipset...

The manual did not specify that it's mandatory to be installed!

that's the first driver you should install after a clean install, before anything else you should install intel INF drivers for XP to detect the chipset properly.
