Hi guys, im trying to decide on what i want to do.

I have an nforce 2 board here, and also a dell 400SC server w/ the 875p chipset on the board

right now, I can either use a barton 3000+ (166x13) or a p4 2.8E

Which would get faster performance with a raddy 9700pro, or would they both be roughly the same.

i agree with the above post

it's close, but i would personally give the hand to the P4 if money isn't a factor and you are overclocking
 
Ok ;o more on the issue


The thing is this.
1. The 400SC is a nice system, but dells bios wont allow overclocks. at all
I like the system a lot because the construction of the server is such that the computer is dead silent (I cant hear unless the room is totally quiet, it takes a glance at the power led or the monitor being on to determine if its on)

2. I have a barton 3000+ right now that stock clocks at 13.5x166(miscut by amd) and runs fine at 11.5x 205 .Somebody who wants to buy it as a complete system (fx5200 512mb 40gig hdd nforce2)

3. i have the a source for an a64 3400+ for around 325.00.
There is also somebody that wants to swap me a a p4 2.8C and a 9700 pro 128mb and 1gig (2x512) of pc4000 ram for the 3400+ and 50.00

4. or my last option would be to buy a p4c or e of some sort and a 9800 pro



Im debating right now, at this point in time, i dont have enough cash to actually go out and purchase a 9800 pro or 9700 as a vid card and im extremely tired of the FX5200 64bit 128mb POS im using now.

If i sell the 3000+, i can afford the either of the two options (3400+ and trade, or purchase p4c and vid card outright)

Im just not sure what to do 🙂
alternately, i can get the 3400+ and keep it and buy a board then hopefully cram for a used 9700 or 9800 pro.
 
i would say go with the option you can overclock

but that athlon64 idea sounds good although that's a hefty trade
 
Stay away from P4E - performance sucks right now, and to boot, it might not even work in that Dell system. If it does work, it could cause component damage (heat, etc - check out hardocp's review). P4C is infinitely better than P4E right now.
 
I received 2 different 2.8e's this week with slightly different results, both cpu's came from NewEgg. The 1st cpu would run 3.5Ghz with a small increase in voltage to 1.4625v, default for the 2.8's is 1.3875. This cpu would not clock higher at any other setting, higher voltage, loose ram timings etc. It also ran hot! 48C at idle and 55C at load on this water system.

The second cpu which I'm typing on runs 3.5GHz at default voltage, it also runs rock solid at 3.71 GHz but at a very high voltage of 1.61v. This is a no win situation as the motherboard itself became very hot. Hot enough in fact I lowered the cpu in fear of damaging my motherboard.

My assessment of the current Prescott's:

Don't buy one intending to overclock unless you're using advanced cooling techniques. My best recommendation is to wait until the newer 775 pin cpu's arrive and their corresponding motherboards are available. The kinks of the Prescott systems should be ironed out by then.
