symptoms:
As soon as XP detects new device ( SB Live! ) after bootup, the machine locks up hard ( this is before I get to Creative's driver installation ). I tried putting the card in every possible PCI slot, again with no luck. I booted in the safe mode, the card was detected and default drivers installed automatically ( the machine did not lock up ), but Creative's driver installation procedure could not find suitable device ( like the card did not even exist ).
setup:
P4C800-E ( latest BIOS ) enabled: Promise controller, Intel NIC, USB2 disabled: serial ports, onboard sound, legacy USB, etc., PnP OS is on
ATI 9800
Sound Blaster Live ( old XGamer edition )
XP Pro with SP1
