P4B-533 & 800mhz P4's => Is anything *WRONG* with his theory ?

Saw the following over at the asusboards forum here:-

Everything "William" wrote makes %100 perfect sense to me.

Can anyone see / think why the new PIV's with the 200 mhz fsb would NOT run on a P4B533 ?

I look at is this way - *hopefully* we will be able to run a 2.8 H/T PIV with say a modest overclock to say a 230mhz fsb - that would give us 14 x 230 = 3.22gig running at a 230 mhz fsb *with* H/T all on our super-trusty P4B533's !!!!

And anyway, *assuming* the above will work, who gives a rats-ass about using single channel DDR vs dual-channel DDR - all reports so far are showing *very* minimalperfomance increases [ around %3 - %5 ] going from single-channel DDR to dual-chanell DDR.

seems like the chips should work since the fsb options go up high enough....The thing is doesn't the board not support HT??? And if it does not, don't count on it being added through a bios option. If I have learned anything about these mobo manufacturers is other then fixes here and there and an option to give support to latest chips on boards that are not so far behind their latest offering, they wont update it...They want you to buy their PE chipset board, or their GB mobo, or their Sis655 offering....They wont fix this trust me...

Edit: And ofcourse without HT who really gives a shite about the 200fsb chips...The 1mb l2 cache is rumored not to be in these first offering of chips...

the P4B533 variant does support HT and can easily support 200fsb unofficially.
many of us here have already run 220+fsb on those boards w/o a sweat.

OK....If it supports HT and I knew it had 200+fsb adjustments then I don't see why not.....

I think the only key as Thugs suggested is will most boards that have 200+ fsb run reliably at those speeds from their chipsets?? Does the new 800fsb chipset mobos like the one by Abit and the new one listed by Albatron run a new northbridge chipset???

from what i understand ~ no, its the same old i845pe in those boards.
(p4b533 variants are i845e)

Remember that the 845E chipset [P4B533] and the 845PE are %99.9 identical - the ONLY difference that I am aware of is:-

=> 845PE "officially" supports DDR 333

Like the Asus P4PE, the P4B-533 [ PCB rev 1.03 and higher ] are all H/T ready - you just need to flash to the 1011 or higher bios.

So, if you are a P4B533 owner, why swap-over to a P4PE ?

In short - you would be CRAZY to !

Why ?

Well, given that it is almost %100 certain that the P4B533 *will* run the new PIV's, not only will you have to swap out your trusty board, but you will need to buy new PC 3200 > dual-channel DDR.

And after you have done all that and spent a reasonable amount of $$ doing it, the only performance "bump" you will get is at max a %3 - %5 boost from going to dual-channel DDR.

To say that such a small boost would likely not even be noticeable or visibile in anything other than a pure benchmarking scenario is an understatement.

Only a crazy person with too much time on their hands and money to burn would do that !!

Bring on those new PIV's !!!

Oooops.........just remembered that the P4PE is *NOT* a dual-channel DDR board so you wont even get a performance boost by doing it !!

unless you must have dcddr NOW ~ there is no reason to replace the p4b533.

both the p4pe and p4b533 will work well with 200fsb cpus.
the only inherant limitation could be how many sticks of ram you could run at that speed.

As always, great advice Thugs.

I agree - the higher FSB goes, the greater the chances of multiple-DDR sticks not "playing" well together.

Thats why I always use only (1) stick of DDR in any machine I o/clock -> ie:- (1) x 512 - more than enough for %99.99 of situations.

Once the new PIV's come out, we should start to see [much better] avaialbility of 1gig DDR sticks and *much* better pricing on same.

Don't the 800Mhz FSB P4's come with a new instruction set??
I think we should look into whether the older chipsets will run SSE3
other wise they will be like the old northwoods wouldn't they??

No, the new instructions will first come with Prescott in q4. The new chips are just northwoods with 200fsb and HT, no more cache and instructions.

exactly, chances are i will be skipping 200fsb until Prescott & 1mb cache.

Ohhh Thanx for correcting me
Will the Prescott's have the 478pin layout or that 775??pin LGA layout??

If I were a betting man I would say you will not be able to resist, HT is calling you Thugs hahahahah. ;)
