P41.6A@2.4 vs XP2100 ???

Currently I am in the process of pricing out a system for my Mom's friend. I know that she just wants something to be super stable and easy to configure if she has to do anything with it. (No flames over this please, I just have had no problems ever with putting together a P4 system, as opposed to what I have heard about setting up an AMD system...)

So, what I was thinking was that to save her a bit of money and possibly upgrade my own system a bit if it works out that way, is to sell her my P4 1.6A, ram and mobo, and get a new XP2100, ram and mobo for myself. The thing is though, I really have no clue as to whether this would actually be an upgrade for myself or not. Also, if it sounds like a feasible upgrade, which mobo should I be looking at right now?

Thanks.

maybe instead of a xp2100 you should look for an xp2400 because you overclock and they are good overclocking cpus
if its out of the price range, i would get an xp1700 or xp1800 tbred cpu, as they will overclock to xp2200 speeds easily for the most part

for a mobo, a7n8x is a good choice along with asus a7v8x (depends if you like nforce2 featuers, or dont care much for them and can get kt400)
do you care for dual channel ddr? (as thats pretty much teh only difference between a7n8x and a7v8x)

if you dont care for the newer features, epox 8k3a(8k3a+ if you want raid) was also a good overclocking board for amd (its a kt333 chipset)

I did alot of research and talked to alot of friends who know this stuff inside out and I went with an EPOX 8RDA mobo. It's a superb mobo for under $100. You can see the reviews on it on anandtech. Plus, you absolutely should go with an nForce2 mobo cause the reviews show it blows away the kt400 equivelents in almost every concievable benchmark. anandtech also has a comparo on this as well.

Depending on what your using your pc for will determine what speed processor you need. The XP2100 is equivelent to a P4 2.1 and can be bought for under $100. To step up to even an XP2200 gets you at $150, which IMHO isn't worth the extra money unless your running something that's gonna require alot of CPU cycles (like 3d rendering).

I Play internet games online and do web application development and the processor has never been the bottleneck. I would be surprised if you had the need for an XP2400 or greater with what your usage would be.

I personally am gonna wait for AMD to come out with their next generation of processors, and then I'll buy a fast 333mhz T-bred from them hehehe.

i'd say get a nforce2 mobo(epox is my choice because it's cheap)
and a xp 1700+ t-bred
some people have reached 1.8-2.0 ghz with it (XP2200+ - XP2400+ levels)

I think what most ppl are missing here is the fact you have a 1.6a@2.4ghz with a 600fsb since it would be 150x4...Jumping to an xp 2100+ and hoping you can get a little out of it or getting a tbred and hoping you get to 2ghz or near 2400+ is not going to be a noticeable difference in performance....

In some instances it may be a back step....So unless you are saving a butt load of money between you sale and buying new stuff I don't think much of it as an upgrade...

You'd be better to wait for bartons, prescotts, or hammers.....

That is my opinion!!!
