P4 vs XP retail HSF noise levels?

I just want to know if the P4 retail HSFs are quieter than the AMD XP retail HSF's.
For example;
A 1.6a P4 vs. a 1700XP ... would the AMD be louder or about the same? I'm strictly talking retail HSF here. Nobody tell me anything about other heatsinks. Please, if you've experienced both, let me know, thanks.

hey smp,

while i don't have a p4, going by intel's history, i'd say the retail p4 fan will be much much quieter than the retail xp fan. intel processors just tend to need less cooling because of the research and money intel puts into their heat reduction, while amd chips need more cooling because of all the extra heat they generate.

LOL, some people :D

Intel's HS/F Retail parts are quietier, because the fan only spins in the 2200-2700rpm range.

AMD uses CoolerMaster's with the Slim Deltas, which are considerably noisier.

The P4's heat spreader is what allows better thermal dissipation. Willamette actually consumes more energy and dissipates more heat than AthlonXP; Northwood does much better, but we're still talking 50-odd watts. (At stock voltage / speed)

FYI... the fan that comes with the Intel Boxed P4 (Northwood) is a variable speed fan containing a thermal sensor. When air temp entering the HSF unit is <= 33 degrees C, the fan will run at lowest (very quiet) speed. It will increase in speed and noise until the air temp hits 43 degrees C at which point it will be running at max speed. Intel recommends providing sufficient cooling to keep case internal air temp entering the HSF at 40 degrees C or less. From everything I've read - particularly on Intel's site, the P4 runs pretty cool even when core voltages are increased up to around 1.7V. Above that, core temps rise fast and damage can occur without very good heat removal. I'd be curious to hear from those that have increased core voltage avove the 1.5 norm on a P4 with Intel HSF just to see how temps behave.

Thanks guys. I'm well aware of the heat issues with both processors, and I know that AMD generates more heat. What I really wanted to know was if anyone has actually experienced both and can say "The retail XP HSF is only marginally louder than the retail Northwood HSF" :)
or something like that.
I guess Pabsters just saying that "yeah, P4 retail is noticabely quieter" ..
Thanks.
