Ok, so now that it is clear that AMD overall is a better choice (other than some video rendering capabilities). What do you guys think if I get a dual-processor Opteron and plug in a couple of Opteron 246's? I know they were designed for server use, but would I be able to get good performance using it as a pc and get better/faster results for the video rendering?

Yep, and then this read will read "P4-M vs Athlon X2". Heh.

The P4M does outperform A64 clock-for-clock. But it needs a better FPU before they could bring it to the desktop.

Since you already have a P4 2.6, upgrading to an A64 3200 is not going to give you any noticeable gains for the most part.

If I were you, I'd wait a while before upgrading - your rig is still good enough to run with the best for the next year IMO.

Your performance would be great. But it would also be a great waste of money. Just to consolidate what people are saying. Stick with what you have until A64 X2's enter your price range, nothing else offers significant improvement at encoding.
