p4 to dual core

Hey hi you,
I'm thinking about buying a new processor for my desktop. I currently have a P4 3.06gHz socket 775, 1.5bg of RAM and a geforce 8800gts.

What I'm mostly doing on my desktop pc is playing games, so would a cpu change make such a difference? Is it worth it?

Then, if yes, what to buy? I know close to nothing about cpus. I'm looking for something rather cheap, about 125$ (canadian dollars ahaha, sorry). Like, what's the difference between these :

well it depends a LOT on your motherboard. Not all socket 775 CPU's work on all socket 775 motherboards..so you need to give more info. Ideally a core 2 duo CPU would give the best performance. The pentium 2180 and the E4500 are core 2 duo's. The pentium-d is litteraly just 2 pentium 4's slapped together, and not much better than what you already have. The E4500 would be the biggest performance boost of those, but only if your motherboard supports it.
 
If you have rev 1.0B of that motherboard, you're seriously in luck.

CPU Compatibility List

You have support for the e21x0/e6x00/e6x20 series of chips. You may have to do a BIOS update to actually use these processors, make sure to flash to the newest available before removing your current P4 cpu from the board.

Here is a good starting summary of the lower-priced processors you could get. I would probably recommend the e2180 ($92) as it has the highest stock performance of this series and costs less than $20 more than the lowest performer.

It really doesn't make sense to go above the e21x0 series with your motherboard as the e6x00/e6x20 chips cost a lot more than their faster/newer e6x50 counterparts (example: e6550 @ 2.33GHz is $170 while the older e6420 @ 2.13GHz is $200). Add to that the fact that the e2180 will be much much faster than your P4 3.06GHz and it's a win.

Check this page at ncix.com for your upgrade options. I would still recommend the e2180 as your best price/performance deal for your current motherboard.

oh and does a new processor uses a lot of power supply charge? i have a 450W.
