p4 thermal throttling

At what temps does a p4 1.6a start to throttle down in order to lower its temp? is there any way to monitor this activity (ie, actually seeing a precentage of throttling in use) or do you just need to stay under a certain temp?

About 80 celcius. I've abused my old 2.4b, watching it post without a heatsink on a flaky motherboard. They are pretty durable cpus, but I don't recommend posting without a heatsink.

thats pretty damn hot but ive also heard 70c? under full load im hitting 64c after many hours, i just want to make sure im under the cutoff where throttling kicks in. when a cpu starts to throttle, would it show up in a real time cpu speed program? like does the mhz actually drop down? or does it stay at the same speed but just not work as hard?

Awesome! nice program there thanks for the link. btw i tested those items in the features tab with Sisoft Arithemetic and Multimedia tests and there was very minimal/no difference with thos settings enabled or disabled. however putting throttling on 12.5% severely slowed down the computer and benchmarks ;-)

cool program

oh and also i turned off my cpu fans while it was under full load to see when it would start to throttle and its 71c for my p4 1.6a. so is it safe to assume anything under 70c is deamed "safe" cpu temps?

They might be safe CPU temps, but they might shorten the processors life. Some will burn out quicker than others at that kind of temp.

honestly, you need better case cooling if you're worried about your 1.6a staying under 70C....my 1.6a@2.4GHz, 1.7V runs at 48C load, on the stock HSF. Granted, the case has good airflow.

All I can say, is that those chips are the best. overclockers. ever.

what motherboard are you using? my 1.6a at 2.4ghz 1.61volts IDLES at 48c, 63c under prime95. case ventelation isnt a problem because even if i take the side cover off it only drops 2c. and all this on the stock hsf? i find it kind of hard to bieleve unless you have an extremely extremely cold room. im using an alpha heatsink on my p4 which is a lot bigger and has a 80mm fan on it. even at stock speed my chip rests around 44c. i dont bieleve your claim, maybe your using a motherboard temp diode thinking its the cpu temp?

X-Bit did a very good evaluation of the thermal throttling on P4 and the throttle kicked in at 72c I believe. I'd link it but I get a MySQL error. Check it out when you have a opportunity.
