Hey there,

I've heard a lot about thermal throttling. I've heard people say it has to be enabled and i've heard others say that it is automatically enabled. anyone know the real scoop?

thanks!

Auto for the most part. If your HSF were to fall off, the P4 automatically throttles down after it reaches i think 60c. I'd like to see an Athlon do that

I think it's closer to 110c when that happens, it's definately a lot higher than 60c.

And if it makes you feel better at ~135C (measured by a second on-die sensor that you can't read or see and is probably in a hotter part of the chip), the processor will shut off. This sensor is designed for rapid change (faster than an external feedback circuit can function). This is in case your heatsink falls off.

thanks! i do feel better!

but does anyone know if there's anything in the BIOS about Thermal throttling? I just heard that its always on, but you can change how much it throttles down.

Guess that depends on the motherboard. My IC7 has adjustments to your liking for both percentage throttling and temperature you want it at. Older motherboards don't, I'm dunno look into it.

My P4C800-E deluxe dont have any of those options, but the P4 itself knows when something is wrong, and thats good enough for me. Check this article on it when the P4's came out on the thermal throttle down, You get to see a Athlon fry:D

P4 survives, Athlon dies
