What am I doing wrong? I just set up the new computer and everything looks great except the CPU temp. It's a 2.26GHz processor and I'm running it at 1700 (17 x 100). I put the thermal grease on, and the heatsink looks like it should be working. The heatsink doesn't feel very hot, is it supposed to? what can I do to fix this

42 C isn't too hot, I wouldnt worry about it unless you have instability. mine runs around 45 on a regular basis and it's never shown any ill effects.

Your body temperature is about 36.6 - 37.0 C (YMMV)
42 C feel kinda warm to the touch.
50 C feel hot to touch.
55 C is the comfort limit for your fingers (except for chemists and Moms :))

42 C is an excellent temperature for a processor.

in the summer, the system in my signature idles at 42* and hits 54* at load. btw, why are you running that sucker at 1.7 instead of 2.26?

I'm running it at 1.7 because I didn't know if 42 was dangerous or not. I thought you were supposed to try and keep it under 40, and I'm using an MCX478 which I thought would be better than the intel stock cooler. Is it possible that I just messed up the grease?

he forgot to mention that his BIOS temp says 42C at POST after the comp has been off for a long time. The temp never rises more than 3C or so.

edit: he also told me that it was 42C *outside* of the case, UNDERCLOCKING the CPU, with that $65 swiftech heatsink and a *DELTA* fan. Something's wrong there

make sure that the contact area between the heatsink and the processor is level. it's easy to install it crooked with the bolt on heatsinks. make sure that you have each screw a half turn, alternating between them in an x pattern, to tighten it down. by the way, it's pretty impossible to fry a pentium IV, so just reinstal the heatsink, making sure you are extra careful that it is level, and then put it to stock speeds. also, do you have the fan blowing away or towards the heatsink? alphas are made for the fan to blow away from the heatsink, but swiftechs need the fan to blow towards the heatsink.

With summer here, my 2.0A idles at 34 and hits 40 at full load with a thermaltake HSF in an Antec sx1040 with four 2900RPM case fans. OCing to 2.4 only raises the temps about 3 degrees.

I just built at 2.0A system for my GF's aunt, and it idles at 39 and hits 46 at load with the stock HSF in an Antec Plus660 with one 2400RPM case fan. (I didn't OC her's)

The suggested thermal limit from Intel is 70c for a 2.26 P4. You're fine.

Scroll to bottom look under "maximum case temp" (case as in CPU casing)

BTW, Intel advises that you keep the air inside the computer case under 40c. So never let your case or room get above 104F :)

What motherboard are you using? If it's a P4B266 then the temp in tha bios and Asus Probe won't go below 42c or 104f.Try to use Motherboard monitor it will give you a closer reading ;)

he's using an Abit IT7 motherboard. Seems so far he's able to get up to 2.8-2.9GHz overclock with full load temps under 60C, but he told me that one side of the heatsink is hot and the other is cool. Not sure what this means, but maybe the heatsink should be reseated
