P4 Prescott vs E6300 Etc

I was looking at upgrading I have a Pentium 4 Prescott DT, 3.4GHZ, 1 MEGB, 800FSB now and was looking at the Core 2 Duo Chips what kind of increase is say

Pentium 4 Prescott DT, 3.4GHZ, 1 MEGB, 800FSB vs

Intel Core 2 Duo processor E6300 (1.86GHz)

No difference in games, one core of C2D at 1.86GHz isn't faster than P4 at 3.4GHz - there aren't many games that can utilize dual cores. To make it significantly faster, I guess you need 2.2+GHz C2D.

How do I know? I have laptop running Core Duo at that speed and P4 at 3.2GHz...ran many tests, P4 is faster on single-threaded ones and not far behind in others.

A world of difference. Especially in games or multitasking

Hmm, actually at stock speeds the difference wouldn't be that big in most cases, for gaming at least. Multitasking is obviously much better on dual core.

Generally, C2D is 2x as powerful as P4 clock for clock, so a 1.86GHz C2D is roughly equivalent to a 3.7GHz Pentium D. In single threaded tasks, it's only slightly faster than a P4 3.4GHz.

Core *2* Duo is faster than Core Duo clock for clock. 😉

C2D @ 1.86GHz is marginally faster than a P4 @ 3.4GHz.

Yes C2D is faster than CD, perhaps 15%. P4 can pull good in some cases due to high clock. Either way, I think my assessment is right, to make it difference, he needs a faster C2D and their price... hurts. E6600 2.4 would be nice upgrade, but it is US$300+ everywhere.

True that. There's always overclocking though, and the E6300 certainly has plenty of headroom for that.

Signed.

Why pay $$$ for extra clockspeed on a Core 2 Duo when you can buy the cheapest one and bump it up to 3Ghz? 😉

Well, also keep in mind that the OP here may have to buy a new video card as well as a MOBO and RAM. So, there is the potential to improve at every level depending on his current gear.

Just get a 6300, and OC to 3.4, then it WILL be twice as fast as your P4.

And probably 1/2 as hot. So, that's one area the PrescHOTT will still win, heating your house.

Well, at stock yes, at 3.4 its only a little cooler I think, thats a LOT of power....Twice the computing power of a X2@2.5 !

Hold out for the 6320 🙂 Then O/C mildly for a huge performance boost. Seems like the C2D w/4MB L2 instead of 2MB L2 gives a 0%-10% performance boost across the board. And for about the same $$ as the current 2MB 6300. Cheers
