I am building a new p4 system today and the power supply I got, though it said it was p4 compatible, did not have the square 4 pin connector. Does anyone know if I can wire that myself or if I have to order the cable. For a $2-3 cable I am sure Ill pay $7-8 in shipping, and I would like this asap.

Thanks
Garrett.

Try the FS/FT forum, you might get it cheap. Or you can order it from PCpower and cooling for 10 shipped along with some nice thumbscrews.

You may not need the adapter. What motherboard are you hooking it up to? I know my Asus P4B266 has the 2x2 power connector as well as a 4-pin Molex connector, so you don't need a "P4 certified PSU". The 4-Pin molex is just a regular "CDROM power" hookup cable.

Some have reported that they don't need anything but the regular ATX power cable hooked up. I know this was reported on the Asus P4T motherboard a while back.

Good luck!

The connector I need is the 2x2 pin molex. The board is an Epox, uh, some model with a i850 chip. I will try powering without.

I think you might have misunderstood. SOME motherboards can use a regular 4 pin molex connector but if yours doesn't have that feature (only one or two exceptions that I know of) you will need the 2x2 connector or adaptor.

I understood just fine.

I tried without the extra power cord and it worked fine. I read into it a little more, it seems intel designed the i850 a little better than the i845. While intel dosent say right out you dont have to use the extra plug with the i850, it dosent give a warning about not using it like on the i845 chips.

Ya, that is what I needed. I have seen that online, and I didnt want to pay that much.(see first post). I did check at radioshack to see if they had a cable or a connector for one I could wire. But the board works fine without it. If it would not have, though, I would have just wired it myself, cutting a cable from the power supply and soldering it on the board, maybe even taking the time to go find a fitting plug.
