P4 / P5 question

I was under the understanding that the prescott would use the socket-T connector (from what I read on here), however in the May issue of Maximumpc, they said the Socket-T would impliment with the next generation intel chip (Tejes, not sure on spelling). My question is if intel isn't using the socket-T what will it use? Will it be 478 pin and work with the canterwood? Any help would be great.

I think Prescott is just a die shrink from the current 0.13 micron to the 0.90 micron nanometer scale. The actual implementation of the new socket won't be until Tejas. However, as with all things, you never can tell.

However, I did some surfing on the web and came up with some more info:

Prescott Info

Intel did mention that the Sram runs at a frequency higher as the then fastest Pentium 4. This may mean that the old Xeon tradtion that the L3 cache bus runs at the same frequency as the processor core is continued with the Pentium 5.

One wonders what the relation is with the newly announced 775-contact pinless Land Grid Array (LGA) package with 297 contacts more as the current 478 pin package..

So, I guess this new 775 pin could be the socket-T you are talking about.

Prescott will start as Socket 478, then move to Socket-T later on for Tejas

Prescott Vs Northwood
.09u................13u
32k L1............16k L1
1 Meg L2.........512K L2

Also improved Hyperthreading, some other stuff I forget.

Fixed that info for ya 🙂

Ok so the Prescott is 478 (ie it will work with a canterwood board) but you said it will move to socket-T, now when it moves to socket-T is it still a Prescott or is that when the Tejas takes over later 2004? Just wanting to know because I'm wanting to move to a 800Mht board but I want the Prescott, so if one board will do me a while then I will go on and switch and pick up one of the cheaper 800Mht chips, but if prescott is going to switch too socket-T soon after its release then I'll wait for it and just do a few bin jumps with my current set up (1.8a 400Mht)

Thanks

Dont know. Prescott is not till the end of the year from what I've heard. I dont know when Prescott moves from S478 to Slot-T Tejas. The Prescott should work in an i875 board from what I've gathered.

Maybe someone else knows?

From what I can gather the Prescott becomes the Tejas second half 2004, and as long as you are not saying "Prescott" is going to move to socket -T then it sounds like a 800FSB board will be the way to go. Because from what I read the board for the Tejas is going to work with both the prescott and the tejas, sounds weird to me too. I just hate to buy a board and within a year a complete new setup be out. I know in late 2004 I have to get a new board anyway because of PCI express, I just want to only have one up grade in the middle and still have an upgradeable system if I want to do some bin jumping.

Thanks
