P4 owner, we are just way too "quiet"

Not going to discuss AMD XP2500 vs Intel P4-2.4B! (since I have both AMD and Intel setup)
I can't believe how dead silent P4 setup can be. Yes, I meant DEAD silent!

I got a
ABIT BE7 (no north Bridge fan)
P4- 2.4B @ 3.06Ghz @ 1.60V
RADEON 8500 w/o FAN but mod w/ BIG HS

This is what I have mod into my rig.
I replace my PSU w/ NMB 80mm fan. (less than 18dBA)
and 1 NMB 80mm fan (less than 18dBA) for Case fan. (actually I don't need this)

Now, we all agree P4 STOCK HSF running at 2800rps is quiet right? (NO!, not to me because I can still hear that "mmmmmmmmm" sound)
So I went to CompUSA and bought a Voltage regulator. <-this one has 12V, 10V, 9V setting.
Plug into my Stock CPU fan set it on 9V and now it is running @ 1900 rpm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After 1 hour of UT2003, and the temp stay below 55 degree full load and 41 degree idle!!!!!!

There you go...........you don't need a copper HS nor 3000rpm fan, if you just running your P4@ 3.0Ghz!!!!!!

oh........I can even sleep next to my PC now.

Currently I have no panels on my antec sx635 since there being painted right now.

So my case doenst have any extra cooling and only the cpu fan on my 2.4B, and thats a Thermalright AX-478 with a low speeed 80mm panaflo.

Thats ok because she rocks at low voltage, I know when I do put my case back together ill have to add some more cooling but right now is the best with just 21 db of sound.

I also have a seagate serial ata drive on the way to knock even more noise out of my case.

Yes I like quiet :)

Pah. The gentle hum of my eight case fans lulls me off to sleep. Also helps white-noise out the traffic, construction, and those damn birds.

You forget - quiet is only worth it when you have a quiet environment to start with. :p

I'm a quiet PC kind of guy too. I also run a 2.4B @ 3.06.

I also thought the stock P4 HS/F was a little too loud. Here is my quiet setup:

I run an Alpha 8942 P4 HS with a 1900 RPM, 24 CFM Panaflo L1A. Now that's quiet!
Antec True330 power supply with low rpm variable speed thermal controlled fans.
Panaflo L1A as front intake fan
Panaflo M1A 2400 RPM 32 CFM Rear fan. The M1A was too loud for me. I use an awesome program SpeedFan to control the speed of that fan. I have it setup so that at idle low load times (like now) when my CPU temp is 40C or lower, the M1A spins @ 30 % of full speed which makes it inaudible. When I'm playing a game and the CPU temp goes up, it goes to full speed. Best of both worlds. Works perfectly!

I highly recommend SpeedFan to anyone who likes things quiet. If you think about it. Fixed RPM fans are not a good idea to begin with. SpeedFan can vary the RPM of any fan on your mobo header based on any temp reading. Not all mobos are supported though.

TimeKeeper, you may have been able to lower the P4 RPM with Speedfan, and also have it go up when temperatures require it without any additional hardware. 3.06 @ 1.6Vcore with an undervolted stock HS/fan sounds kind of hot to me. I would go back to full RPM on the CPU, and see if Speedfan works on your mobo. Abit support looks pretty good, so it probably will.

Next upgrade is an FX 5800U!

Not really quiet here. I slaped a Tornado on top of my MCX-4000. When I first fired the thing up I was like, you've got to be kidding me. I don't even notice it now. And since I've got my 2.53@2.94 (for the moment) at 1.5vcore and I'm getting temps of 27C at idle I'll say the little extra noise is worth it :D

leave it on there for a few months and you'll feel like killing that fan
i did it with my Delta 60mm screamer

You dont need 27C @ idle. Right now, I run ~ 33C idle with a 1900 RPM fan @ 3.06 GHz 1.525 Vcore. You can have very good cooling without a bunch of noise.

I know I could toss a slower fan on and still have perfectly fine temps but my tornado doesn't bother me so why switch? I'm kind of anal about cooling anyway. Maybe it's stupid but the lower the my temps are the better I feel I'm doing. Hell, I even took the time to lap my hs. Just how I am.

And bgeh, I've had it on for two months already. Doesn't bother me one bit ;)

Believe it or not, even my fan spinning back to 2800rpm the idel temp still @ 41 compare to 1900rpm.
I look into the bios and lower the CPU volt to 5% increase instead of 10%.
Well....only 1 degree different.

I think the reason that I have bit higher idle and game temp simply because I use old fashion thick metal case, that totally seal out the fan noise. (there is no side panel opening, nor front air intake)

How about full load? Use CPUBurn to test.

Did that! full load w/ this case and 1900rpm fan. (room temp 78F)
It will reach no more than 56C.

p.s. I use this program "CPU Stability Test Copyright 1999-2000 Jouni Vuorio." for 18 hrs.
System run perfectly.

If I could just get rid of the noise coming from my chipset fan on my Gigabyte 8PE667 ultra. With my cheap HSF on my 2.26 I'm at 2.720 max temps at 45c @2.9 gig temps are at 51c. Still a little hesatent on keeping it above 2.72 can't aford to buy another temp.
BTW these are all at stock voltage. The Gigabyte board under volts alittle according to MBM.

I have a hard time believing that a P4 overclocked to 3GHz+ with the stock cooler at 1900rpm could keep it at 33C under load. I think that is a bit exaggerated.

If you can show me some proof of this and I can hear it from many users, then I might believe it, but otherwise I think it is exaggerated because I have never seen those temps on such a setup unless it is watercooled or high speed fan on a SLK900, etc.

Wow, Nice! 56C with that cooling setup is very good! I've seen something similar on my rig. I run the 1900 RPM Panaflo L1A on an Alpha 8942. I tried a Panaflo 2500 RPM M1A and saw no difference at all.

If your drive is crazy loud, how is your computer quiet? I must be missing somethin' here.

What I want to know is how quiet your room is. I mean it must have ultra thick walls and no windows so that there is zero noise. Fluid hard drives are quiet, so I would be impressed to see how quiet the area is that this computer is used. Maybe some pics would be nice.

I just find it dificult to believe all this.

All what? My PC in in my den. It's quiet when the kids aren't running around like now. I can easily hear the Panaflo M1A case fan when it is spinng @ full 2500 RPM.

Don't even know how the flame started.

I live in the condo 6th floor high w/ window closed? So, it shouldn't be that noisy right?

NMB is <18dBA (by definitely, anything less than 20dBA is hard to detect by human ear more than 1 feet away, hope you guys agree w/ this)

So, I mod my PSU w/ NMB fan too.

I mod my ATI 8500 video card w/ large HS w/o fan, and my BE7 also does NOT have NB fan.

Therefore, entire system has 1 case fan (NMB fan) + 1 PSU fan (NMB fan) + undervolt CPU fan w/ 1900rpm.
Is it so hard to believe?

HD makes sharp noise if you have your case open or inside the light alumium case.

I don't have digicam, otherwise, I would like to take some pics. Just don't think I can take the pic of noise level?

First I am not starting any flame war, it is just that it is hard to believe and I am not doubting your accuracy, just it is a little strange.

Two quick questions might help. First what is the room temp? Second, what is the case temp and what is the case?
