p4 overclocking problem?

hey guys...for some reason whenever i try and overclock using the 3:4(2.6) divider my cpu can never boot up into windows while when i set it at 1:1(2.0) i cane get up to 160fsb

i am using 512 stick of corsair xms3000c2, and even with the lowest timings my system won't boot into windows, which kinda defeats the purpose of having the faster memory if i can't run it at its rated speeds yah know?

board...Gigabyte 8iexp rev.2 f8 bios
p4 1.8a

hope someone can help me with this...i have overclocked up to 2.8ghz with my cpu...just i can't seem to get the 3:4 divider to work correctly so that my sysyem will boot after 133fsb

well at 133mhz 3:4 ratio is 177mhz ram
if at 150fsb with 3:4 ratio ram is at 200

at 138fsb with 3:4 ratio ram is around 185mhz, which is the rated speed of you ram

so if you go past 139fsb, you are going over the rated speed of the ram

i suspect a 1:1 ratio at 160fsb is better than 139 and ram at 185mhz but just to be sure try sandra 2001

hmm actually it won't even boot up at 133fsb...and my memory is rated for 370mhz...dunno what's wrong...all i get is a black screen or some random windows sys file is corrupt error, the 3:4 divider seems to be the culprit cuz nothing seems to work even when i turn the ram timings to lowest...my mem is rated for cas 2 and i set it to 2.5-7-3-3 and it still no workie

2-5-2-2 works like a charm though on the 1:1 divider just gets a little too hhot for my tastes

wow i just tried running memtest and i got a buttload of erros on the first go around...i guess i got a bad stick from FS/T and its not the mobo...couldn't even run ddr 333 without problems

i wonder if its the mobo though...cuz technically the intel 845e doesn't support ddr333+

Shouldn't matter if the board "officially" supports it or not. If you have the option to do 1:1, 3:4, or whatever it should work.

Hey HenHowC, I have the exact same thing happening with my Epox 4G4A+ (i845G chipset). My C1 1.8A will OC up to 160 FSB (2.88GHz)and my stick of XMS3200 (512MB) will only do 1:1 at that speed. When I try 3:4, XP hangs at the splash screen no matter what RAM timings I use - SPD, Manual, or Turbo. I can run 133 FSB and enable 3:4 all day long, but as soon as I try to do some real OC'ing I have to set the ratio to 1:1. It's a great mobo except for that aspect, so I've ordered an Abit BE7 (i845PE chipset) to try to take advantage of running the XMS3200 at its rated speed (or higher). 😉 Thugsrook and pastorjay have had really good luck running their XMS mem at well over 400MHz with the BE7. Your XMS3000C2 should be able to hit 200MHz even if you have to use relaxed timings, so I would definitely say it's our mobo chipset and not our RAM.

thanks for letting me know you're having the same problem...its probably a mobo limitation since i have an older 845E chipset and no one seems to be using this mobo on these forums at least 🙂

currently im running 1:1 at fastest timings at 150fsb @ 2.7ghz and 300DDR so its not too bad but i kinda feel like i wasted that $155 when i could have just kepy my crucial ram and ran it at the same speed 🙂

Have you tried uping vdimm voltage??? Maybe 2.7v???

Doobieonline, It may be you were setting it too high for you memory stick...Your 3000 is only rated for 370mhz and at 160 with a 3:4 ratio it is 426mhz ddr...Did you try upping voltage??? I mean cmon...I have been able to get my i845d epox mobo to run my 3000 corsair stuff at 428mhz ddr then I start to have some restart issues due to the ram. At that point I am at 2.7v already.

yeah ived tried upping the voltage on the ddr...you're right about our ram being rated for about 370mhz...but there is something wrong with something when you can't even run it over ddr 333 at the most relaxed timings...the highest i could get my system to boot with the 4:3 divider was 125fsb = 333ddr, and even then the system locked up after about two minutes

im thinking that the tradeoff between 2.7@300DDR wouldn't be that big of a difference from 2.5ghz@370DDR...pretty tired of mobo swapping when new ones keep coming out 🙂 i've become a jaded upgrader...taking out cpus.mobos and etc...just takes up too much time, especially reformatting and reinstalling all the old stuff 😉

Yeah I was stating for doobieonline he doesn't have much of a complaint in his situation.....

Have you tried going to gitgabyte bulletin boards and see if this is a known issue????

Have you tried some other sticks of ram??? Some mobos may have issues with certain sticks.....

May asus mobo loved my kinmax pc2700 and ran at 410mhz ddr with 2.7v flawlessly, yet my epox i845d mobo would not run it much past 380mhz ddr no matter the voltage....I am saying maybe bad sticks or compatability issues...
