I noticed that there is some sort of plate on the p4 stock cooler hsf...Does that plate indicate that there is some sort of distance between the cpu and the hsf and a paper thin layer of thermal paste won't be enough to make contact with the cpu?

Well i removed that "plate", applied aa, and now i have 70c in a p4 nw!!!

That plate is probably a thermal pad. What kind of thermal paste are you using? Did you put the thermal paste on the CPU too? If you used Arctic Silver there are instructions (im sure its the same for other thermal pastes) at the web site and you should reapply the thermal paste the proper way. Thermal Paste is usually better than the thermal pad.

I had to put my retail heatsink on my P4 last night. (I lost the pump on my watercooler) and I am running normal temps with Arctic Alumina. 1.6A @ 2.4 with 1.7vcore is maxing at 48-50C full load. My case temp stays between 21-22C though (decent airflow).

For the P4 you should apply across the whole heatspreader. Which is probably a little more than a half a grain of rice.

How I do it is to apply several grains worth on the heatsink first. I take a plastic bag and spread it all over really well. With the stuff that is on the plastic bag I put a coat all over the heatspreader on the P4.
I make it a pretty thin coat. Then I wipe of most of the excess on the heatsink and it is ready for mounting.

You should probably test mount your sink and see if it getting a nice even footprint of compound on the heatsink. If it isn't making a whole imprint of the core on the heatsink then your using too little. If a bunch squishes out after you mount then you are probably using too much. A little rim that squishes out is ok, but not much.

Ok i'll try your idea if i dont have any aa left...

apply thin layer on hsf, then apply a little on the cpu and the presto?

btw, thx for your help :D

maybe you should go to overclocking section and check out P4 stock HSF thread...
i can easily link it but i am a subscriber...so if you are not...it's no use...maybe a non-subscriber can do it
