P4 Northwood HSF, which one to get?

I see a lot of people use Siwiftech, others use Alpha, but most of those are pretty expensive. What should I get to improve cooling for my P4? I don't mind spending the money if it works well, but I want to keep it around he $20-$30 range.

I'd say that you should get a Thermaltake dragon orb or a Cooler Master IHC-H71 Heat Pipe 6000RPM High Speed Fan for Intel P4 478 (use Artic Silver) from OCsystem.com or if possible, from newegg.com. Thats my opinion. I am using a CPU radiator zen from inflowdirect.com but it is $112 for the P4 version (i have an AMD version and a socket 478 adaptor). Hope this helps.

6000 rpm for a 70mm fan mite be loud for the cooler master heat pipe. Try the silent version, with the 2800 rpm fan, as it will cool the northwood really well and silent too. But if you want max performance, go ahead with the 6000 rpm, it might get you a few more mhz.

its probably a bare heat sink and no fan. I'd suggest something that pushes 50cfm thats mid range its not the 68cfm delta screamer but its enough to cool it cool even with OC

I second that svc notion. As for fan get the crystal clear variable speed one with 3 blue leds its only $5. So you cant lose since its adjustable.

Is there something wrong with the retail P4 HSF? People have been able to get 1.6A processors to 2.4GHz on default voltage using the retail P4 HSF.

I use the stock HSF, and at just over 2.5g (the highest I was able to get), my 1.6a runs at about 38c idle. So I don't think there's anything wrong with it. That being said, when I get my new 1.6a, if I have better luck overclocking it, I'll probably order an Alpha.

I think the stock HSF is pretty good. With some good case airflow you could get a little more out of it, but if you want to go to the next level then you might have to spring for an Alpha or a Swifti😉

Mikki, wassssuppp😀

PaveGuy, the alarms went off in my head when I saw your handle, it took me a while, but....😉

Welcome to the forums, hope you like it! There's a BUNCH of awesome info and a great bunch of members here!

Talk to ya soon..........🙂

Thanks for the welcome, I've been lerking over here for a while. Good bunch over here!😀

Anyway, back on topic, if you get an alpha just remember the HS is designed to have the fan draw air through it insted of blowing down on it.

Stay away from the thermaltake dragon...I reviewed it and it is crap....The fan is loud even at middle setting of 4800rpm and cools worse then my avc cooler with 4200rpm fan. 6000rpm setting is nonsense and louder then some of my athlon fans....

Get the ys tech fan if you want good ~50cfm fan...fully adjustable from 800rpm to 3600rpm with spin of the dial!!!

I use the retail hs/fan on my 1.7 and the temps stay around 32c. Its running at 115x17 (1955) right now. I don't push it too much because my wife likes a stable system. Now my Epox 8k3a, xp1600 is another story. Push, push, push it until it craps out.

i'm using the avc sunflower. got temps of 31 c full load , 28 idle. pretty good temps for air cooled. but it is kinda loud... had to get the akasa pax mate. but i hear the stock hsf is good enough.
