P4 Northwood 3.0 seeks new MB for cozy relationship

I got this 800 FSB P4 3.0 CPU a couple of years ago. It runs at 3.4 much to my suprise, but I have the voltage at 1.80.

I stumbled into a computer store as I do every few years, and boy, things have changed.

Can I get an up to date MB for this older CPU or should I really bite it and shell out for a new one? The speeds seem the same more or less, strangely...

AS for brands, what do you recommend? I do like Intel, having been given one with a 2 g P4 on it recently. Its snappy somehow...I have no basis for this other than it just "feels" solid.

What I know about hardware could fit into a thimble, but I do like games. So I thought I would again try to take advantage of the knowlege that you guys have. This worked great a couple of years ago, and I like my Abit IC-7, but I have the feeling that PCI-e must be hot stuff and might help me with these new games like Fear and so on.

The truth is that I'm confused as hell about the new stuff.

Is this a socket 478 CPU or an LGA 775 CPU? If it's socket 478 your best bet is probably the i865 or i875 chipsets so you'd be looking at an Asus P4P800 or P4C800, the Abit IS7 and IC7 are also good. If it's LGA 775, the latest i975X-based Asus board has been getting good reviews, the model number is P5WD2 or something along those lines.

Hmm after professor's comment I re-read your post, I don't know if there are any socket 478 boards with PCIe support. I think Intel tried to transition to PCIe, DDR2, and LGA 775 all at once, so you'd probably have to switch the entire platform if you want to use PCIe 🙂. Meanwhile both Nvidia and ATI have viable AGP options now, so it may be worthwhile to just upgrade your video card and hold out for the new architecture coming with Merom and Conroe in a few months.

Yeah if you can still get something of the P4P800 variety by Asus, I had this board with a 2.8c and it was the most rock-solid system I've ever owned.

But if you're looking for PCI-e etc. you probably need a new cpu as well, socket 478 is old stuff...

PCIe socketn 478 motherboard is hard to come by in US. You get lucky and find some in ebay but the seller might gonna be in Europe or something but so far many people like them very much now that the PCIe video card has comedown in price and perform much better than it first came out.

i have a p4c800 deluxe . thing just keep working . but i sure wish it would die a natural death so i could upgrade to pci exrpess

I have a P4C800-E Deluxe I just pulled yesterday. Perfect working order. Awesome board, Intel 875p chipset, digital audio, gigabit lan, etc... Email me if you want it. It has a cpu on it, but I could pop it off I guess.

Oh also a barely used BFG 6800GT "OC" (AGP). 😉
