ok, i have decided to do this and will be getting a board (intel i865pe based), 2.6-2.8c p4 and am going to start with 512MB (2x256) ram. my question is what ram should i go with to o/c the chip to 3-3.2GHz? should i go pc3500 with this ram or go with pc4000 with something like this? the machine has to run reliably.

thank you all so much in advance for your time, i have learned so much about a p4 in the last couple of days :)

If you want to run a 1:1 @ 250FSB get the Geil PC4000 since it offers more headroom for only a few dollars more.

Yes with good ram, a good motherboard, and good cooling you should be able to get to 250. How do you plan on cooling it?

PC4000 = 250MHz

If you have a P4 2.6, it uses a 13x clock multiplier. Couple that with a 250MHz FSB and you have a P4 @ 3.25GHz. You have a very good chance of achieving that speed as long as you have a quality motherboard like the Abit IC7. ;)
