A friend of mine said his computer was crashing in games, so I decided to take a look at it for him. Anyways, his CPU seemed to be running hot (75C+ in the BIOS) so I figured it's probably because he's got a retail P4 with the stock TIM junk that probably has melted and dried up.
Instead, upon opening his case, I found a tiny piece of plastic rattling around in there; to make a long story short this piece of plastic turned out to be part of one of the four plastic mounting brackets on the P4 motherboard (the ones used to hold heatsinks on there).
So, it appears his heatsink wasn't making full contact with the CPU, so I'm 99.99% sure this was causing his crashes (yes, I am aware that the P4 has clock throttling capabilities).
Can I buy a replacement plastic mounting thing and swap out the broken one for it? If so, where can I find them?
Any info on this would be very helpful!
