hi,

i just build a new computer for my cousin who got a chip from INtel (through another cousin who works at intel)
anyz today i put the chip in and all but it doesn't register as an intel p4, it's suppose to be a P4 2.4 533mhz and all??
THis is what it shows wehn i check the cpu properties

1.60gig a x86 Family Intel Model 2 Stepping 7

i downloaded the Intel Frequency Utility that detects its pentium chips and i get this msg:

The tested Intel(R) processor does not appear to be a production processor. The utility is designed to support production Intel processors only.

If this information differs from what was expected, please contact the PC system manufacturer or microprocessor place of purchase.

CAn anyone help me unlock or update teh driver for it?? also when i check it in the device manager, it simply says "processor" ?

not sure what to do?? help!!!!!!!!!

Not much you can do. Your cousin gave your cousin a non-production CPU, a pre-production, "prototype" sort of CPU, the kind that sometimes goes out to reviewers before a processor is officially released. It doesn't contain the codes identifying it as a final production processor (OEM or retail), that's why nothing is properly identifying it.

It MAY be perfectly fine, or it may be a version that had some bugs. It's not a driver issue or anything you can update/fix.

The 1.60GHz x86 blah blah is the complete model and stepping information for the processor, rather than the 'brand name" information. As long as the system works, not much to worry about. That particular stepping is at least one of the newer versions, the same as faster 3.06GHz speeds.

The 1.6GHz may be due to you running it on a 400MHz bus rather than a 533MHz bus or it may not have the multipliers locked like a production CPU would, so it's only running at 4X on a 400MHz bus, or 3X on a 533MHz bus.. Or it may be due to the thing not being a good processor. Might ask how your cousin even got the thing out for your other cousin.

What type of motherboard is it installed on? Is it possible that the motherboard doesn't support the chip?
