My friend's P4 cpu is stuck to the heatsink w/adhesive. Is there an easy way to get it off w/o damaging the cpu? I have heard you could freeze it and that would make it easier. Any suggestions?

Adhesive? Perhaps you mean thermal compound? If it's adhesive pimp slap your friend for being a Fool :p The freezer trick is a good idea if he did use AS adhesive or crazy glue or some other incomprehensibly stupid sh*t on it though since it'll make it brittle but I've never experimented with such things so others will have to provide first hand experiences. If it's just thermal interface material like the stock pad or ASIII then just grip the very edge of the chip and twist back and forth while pulling gently away from the heatsink to remove it, sorry that's all I got for a Darwin candidate :p

It's from a prebuilt system. So it was glued to it from the manufaturer. Probably a Compaq :p He says he tried to pry it off but it's not budging. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried the freezer thing. I think I saw that mentioned in a thread ages ago.

Ask about solvents for safely getting that adhesive off over in the highly technical forum.

Do this.
1) Get Anti-Static bag, large enough for CPU+HSF.
2) Seal it up. Loads of tape just to be sure.
3) Place in freezer for an hour.
4) Take out of freezer, and remove HSF from CPU.

Notes:
May require a little longer than an hour.
If it doesnt come off easy, then give it a bit of "persuasion".
If you f#$k it up, dont blame me.

Oh, and Step 5.
Go to your local shop that sells fish, ask for old moldy one that they`ve had for ages.
Put on Gloves, go around mates house. Pick up moldy fish. Slap him round the face with it. Just for the sake of it.
lol!!!

Just let it run at full load for a few min, this will melt the pad material and make it soft.

when it's nice & hot quickly turn off the PC and remove the heatsink, this should work.

Unless it's really adhesive.

I have seen this before a million times.. I always end up getting a small flathead screwdriver and prying it off. never had a problem.
