P4 HT users that moved A64, do you miss HT?

Please only reply if you've used both platforms and can compare the two. I already know what the benchmarks say.

I'm thinking of scrapping my unstable P4 for an A64, possibly after Christmas. The A64 is very fast, but I often run multiple programs simultaneously - encoding video, browsing the web, sometimes playing games, newsgroups, bittorrent, etc. My alternative is to buy a faster P4C. I did notice a difference in smoothness going from my Barton @ 2.1 to my P4 @ 3.1. Overall the system seemed smoother and there were fewer slowdowns. Any personal input is appreciated.

hi,

i've had both p4 and a64.

if you're a heavy multitasker... honestly, p4 is for you.

i try to game and watch tv off my tv tuner card with the a64 and the tv tuner goes choppy...

i'd say up grade your p4c to something faster... i mean they've dropped in price a lot...

but if you're a heavy gamer, then A64 is definitely the way to go....

i've been really tempted to build another p4 these days with the lga775's hitting over 4.0 ghz easily on air

Actually, it was your CPU history that prompted this post. 🙂 I knew you went from XP -> P4 -> A64. I don't even know if it's possible for me to watch TV and game at the same time. I'm not a heavy gamer. Most of my CPU cycles are spent encoding audio/video, crunching news headers/torrents, and web browsing. Maybe I'll just look for a 3.0C in the FS forum.

The CPU forum is so rabid with Prescott's function as a space heater that I was oblivious to its overclocking potential. Maybe that's worth a looksee...

Good idea and definitely the way to go for frequent multitasking.

The only thing I'll suggest as an alternative is a separate encoder/decoder card to hand all the AV stuff in an Athlon64 machine. You'd have the best of both worlds for probably only 20% more than the cost of the P4.

A dedicated card won't help me much, as I don't encode many things into a standard format. I'll generally use the latest xvid codec which isn't accelerated by any card I'm aware of.

The D0 stepping Prescott's don't run hot like the prior ones.

i have a p4 and i dont use its HT, i dont miss it.

(yes i encode vid and multitask at the same time)

So if you dont use HT, you are saying that performance is higher without it in multitasking applications?
