P4 Heatsinks - just curious

Just curious what you guys are using th cool the P4? Stock or something else. I am getting idle 43C (1.8A at 2.5) and 58C load using stock. Thinking of getting the Vantec Aeroflow to see if that improves things a bit?
SO what is everyone using??

My P41.6A@2400 I'm using the stock HSF and my temps are 28c/82f idle and 44c/111f under load.My heatsink has been lapped and I use the original Arctic silver😎

i use the alpha pal8942 w/3600RPM fan and w/AS3. It dropped my full load temp 7-8°C vs. stock w/AS3. very nice 🙂

The stock intel sinks are really pretty good, the alphas and swiftecs obviously better, but you'll pay dearly.

The AVC sunflower is likely the best of the rest, not terribly expensive, and it's what intel now uses on the 3.06 p4.....

*sigh ~ the stock heatsinks are cr@p 🙁
Have to disagree with that one 😉 Plenty of people using them on overclocked rigs without issue. If you are up in the 2.7+ GHz range, you may need a bigger unit, but for most, the stock one does the job very well.

lately ive hearing that the stock units are "popping" out of the moboards :Q (the little clips work loose)

concidering how much they bend the moboard im not surprised.

*nothing personal oldfart, you know how i hate to disagree with you 😉 🙂

Hey, no problem. These forums are a place to discuss different ideas, and opinions. IMHO, the P4 HS/Fan retention mechanism is one of the best I have ever seen. Heck of a lot better than the old clip on style that the Socket 370 used. I've put together quite a few P4 rigs now. All of them using the stock HS/Fan, all of them overclocked. Not a single issue with any of them. No thermal issues, no mechanical issues either.

oh yea those s370 clips are a disaster waiting to happen :Q

probably why i stuck with the slot1 p2/3 cpus ~ i used alphas on those too 😉

I never liked how "wobbly" they were on the FC-PGA CPUs, but they were better on the FC-PGA-2 (with IHS) CPUs. I had a few S370 rigs and they all were pretty nice. I skipped over the whole Williamite P4 era. Didn't like the CPU or the mobos that were available for them.

The retail, stock hsf is very good. So far, I've gotten my 2.53 up to 2.85. I'm going to go higher if I can. On the other hand, I'm certain the stock hsf can easily be improved on, and I will do so.
