Very interestng to see the design differences excel or get pasted depending on the fan configuration. For example, the SP94 that I own works great (top rated) if the fan speed is high, but is rock bottom using a lower fan speed (no better than Intel stock)

Nice. About what I figured fopr the heatsinks I was familiar with. A few real nice performances by sinks I've never heard of. Only shame is there was no slk948u.

Keep in mind tstep, that Papst fan was REALLY low cfm. Like 18 if I recall.

Yeah, a little disappointed there as am considering the A64 jump shortly once the mobo manufacturers come up with something I truely think is worth purchasing. The SLK948U was one of my top considerations to use on P4 now, then A64 later.

Xp-120 is great (I use it), but mobo compatibility is a bit of an issue.

Holding off on that one for now due to the mobo compatibility issue, since I'm undecided on an A64 mobo. I just picked up a P4EE 3.4 to mess around with for a little while. If I like it and decide to forgo A64 for the time being, what mobo do you have that XP120 strapped onto?

Hello guys,

I'm the author of the review, thank you for your kinds words; I'm working through all the different platforms and will try to have an A64 HSF roundup out by the end of this year, heatsinks I plan to include in that roundup are:

* Thermalright SLK948-U
* Thermalright SB-2
* Thermalright XP-120
* Thermalright XP-90
* CoolerMaster Hyper6
* CoolerMaster Hyper48
* Coolermaster Vortex
* Scythe NCU2000
* Scythe FCS50
* Swiftech MCX6400-V
* Zalman CNPS7000-Cu
* Zalman CNPS7700-Cu

more will be added as I get my hands on them;

the P4 roundup will also get a followup with the missing heatsinks and new ones!

p4p800 now. p4c800 in a few days (although as they said, bending caps will be necessary). Fits the p4p800 with no problems.

Cool jmke. I look forward to it.

:thumbsup: jmke on the review. I wish more reviews out there were as comprehensive, rather than just targeting the max cooling effects with screaming loud fan. I'll be waiting for your next. How extreme was the cap bending w/ P4C800 and the XP120?

lithan: let me know on the cap bending with the P4C800. Interested in that board also.

Yeah looked at the pics. 2nd pic looks a little extreme, but sometimes closeups plus odd angles make pics look worse than reality. Looking for first hand experience comments.

Great review. I really like the HSF roundups because trying to draw conclusions from tests done on single HSF's is maddening.

It's interesting to see the old sp-94 doing so well.

my sp-94 cools my P4e pretty well with a 5000rpm vantect tornado
kinda loud but with a rheostat it works pretty good
lotsa good heatsinks in the review

only limited pressure on the caps, it did not have me worried, reinstalled the heatsinks several times without issue

Great review of course. But honestly though, splitting hairs on incremental differences may look interesting on a chart, but in the real world, it doesn't matter. Most modern CPU's are rated to work with temps approaching 70C; the processor doesn't really care if it's run at 35 vs. 45 C.

In my opinion, the real test is which heat sinks will adequately cool the cpu without making a ton of noise?

Just my opinion.

Better cooling = longer life = slightly better overclocking (nothing serious except at extremes... ie overheating/phase change) = less worries about temps holding you back when testing for max overclock = etc etc etc.

I'd never use a tornado fan 24/7. But I own them for use when I'm first testing the limits of the processor on air, just to be sure temps aren't limiting me.

look for those heatsinks with 92/120mm fans running @ low speed and still show decent temps! that's those are the ones which should fit your profile :)

if you are into overclocking, then lower temps will yield higher clockspeeds :)
