P4 heatsink question... Quickie...

It seems that if i try and move both handles like it would snap the plastic ...

Rather ask before i do.

Also, should i move both handles at the same time...
 
I just did a P4 CPU swap on my mobo last week; as previously posted, it should be snug. No movement of the HSF once properly attached.

The levers do feel like they're going to break in half but they *shouldn't* (it's part of the design)...I pulled/pushed both levers at the same time on mine until they snapped into place and did not encounter any problem...

Once you snap in the 4 lugs you move those 2 levers in opposite directions,it almost feels like you're going to snap them off but dont worry they are made for that.

After it's on there it's very tight, I dont recommend it but it's so tight that you can pick up the mobo by the heatsink. 😉

You may not "recommend" it... But I do it all the time. 🙂
 
There are exceptions to how much pressure it's designed to take. My old motherboard, an 845G max wouldn't take my coolermaster IHC-H71 heatsink very well since the little plastic tabs holding the retention unit for the heatsink were too big. If i had tried to do it too hard, i'm sure it would have snapped the tabs (i confirmed this with coolermaster). I'm guessing the opposite must also be true. Make sure there is contact between the heatsink and the processor when you lock it in. It shouldn't be moving once it's locked, if it is, there's something wrong.

As others have said, it is tight. I find it is best to move both handles at the same time; it makes it a little easier. If you are moving it around with the stock heat transfer pad that came on the heatsink, you probably ruined the pad. It appears to be a waxy substance and scrathes off easily. The instructions at Intel, say to not move it while clamping the levers. If you remove it, you will see what I'am talking about. My suggestion is to take it off and apply some heatsink compound. This is what I do any I find it works better for me. Also, put a little spit on the clamping contact area and they will close easier.
