p4 heat problem

I just removed my retail hsf and thermal bad. Cleaned the heatsink and proc themal plate with alcohol. I placed a thin layer of AS3 on the top of the thermal plate. Spread it around evenly with a piece of saran wrap around my finger. Placed it on the motherboard, locked it in. Put the vantec hsf in place. Turned on cpu and went to hardware monitor in the bios.

CPU temp starts at about 42c and climbs to 60c in .5 incriments and finnaly hits 70+ and that is in the red. so I shut it down.

Is there a set time I need to wait on for the AS3 to "cure" or anything like that?

Have I done something wrong? First time i have put an after market hsf on a p4.

Thanks for the help

Cheers,

You shouldn't smooth it out w/ your finger, but rather, use something thin and flat like a credit card, and make the layer of AS as thin and even as possible (get it down until the card starts making distinct lines in it, smooth it over the lines and install the HSF).

You should reapply the ASIII, thin and flat. And like you said, make sure that the HSF is making proper contact. Curing does takes several days, but should not make THAT much of a difference.

The Intel HSF is supposedly very good, in fact. So, you shouldn't expect too much of an improvement, though I'm not too familiar with the Vantec HSF.

Idling at 53.5*C seems kind of high for a P4, but I guess it depends on how the measurement is being taken and the accuracy of the mobo.

Turns out the vantec is a piece of sh!t. It is not making good contact at all. I have looked very closely at it and I see no way to make it make good contact. I have reattached the retail HSF and I am returning the vantec gsx-7025. I have an asus p4b motherboard. I suppose it just doesn't work with the mounting assembly.

I have purchased an asus p4g8x deluxe and a p4 2.4ghz to help relieve the stress caused by this ordeal tonight.

the retail hsf is working just fine. I am so disgusted with the vantec.

LOL... you just picked up a very, very nice setup... same as mine :)

You might want to pick up an SLK-900 and a good fan to go along with your new hardware ;)

This problem occurs b/c P4 HSFs actually bend a motherboard when put in place. With some boards and retention modules it causes the HSF to not make a good contact with the heat spreader. I got an ECS P4S5ADX+ board, and nothing in the world could possibly cure it's problem of poor contact. It's just a bad motherboard, that's it.

*nods* finger is a BIG no no. Also, is this a new heatsink/cpu? Or did you run it with the heat pad on it to test it first? If you ran it, you might have issues because of that. The heat pads use a wax like substance that will melt into the gaps between the heatsink and cpu. It is next to impossible to remove that substance from all the microscopic crevices in the heatsink just by cleaning it. The only way is to lap it. But this will only remove it from the heatsink as lapping a P4 is NOT recommended.

Intel actually design their retention kit to bend the board slightly. If I remember correctly, there should be about 70psi (maybe 50psi) of pressure on top of the cpu. This preload method is for shock and vibration issue.

What's your system (M/B) temp? if it's over 40C then you need better case cooling instead of better cpu cooling.

Which Vantec? I replaced the retail hsf on my p4 2.53 @ 2.8 with the Vantec Aeroflow and got 4C lower at idle and 9c lower under full load (Prime95). The retail is very good, but the aeroflow is better.

Not sure what your problem might be.

IMO, just get an SLK-800 or 900 and a good Panaflo fan 92mm L1A or H1A. You basically can't do too much better in terms of air cooling performance. Obviously, you can use a louder, higher CFM fan, but that balance is up to you to determine.
