Two PC makers said today that Intel notified them the processor would not be ready for delivery around Halloween, as expected, while sources at a third manufacturer said Intel indicated it may not arrive by then. The Pentium 4 is not expected until the week of Nov. 20 and possibly later.

Intel is missing the Christmas selling season. Looks like another good chance for AMD.

I was going to get a P3 1Ghz, but now I will wait until winter break in Jan. to build my new system. This P2-450, TNT1, SB64 is getting old!

They could just be holding off until they know they'll have enough processors to meet initial demand.

LOL, I'm sorry, I forgot who I was talking about. ;)

This is going to make Q4 sucky for Intel. Considering they'll have a little more than 4 weeks between when the OEMs get P4s, and Christmas, there's no way they'll ship a decent amount this year.

Almost the same.. They can't release the P4 without a chipset to go with it ..

Oh well, maybe this extra month will give them time to iron out any extra 'errata' in the iP4.

Machts Nichts on whether it's the processor or the chipset- point is Intel has messed up for 2 Xmas seasons in a row- last year with the shortage of Coppermines & the 820 fiasco, and now this.
Would anyone be real surprised to see AMD at 1.6-1.7 ghz before the P$ is actually available?
Edit- I was going to change the P$ to P4, but decided that it would get the message across the same!

Grin DDad.

No, I wouldn't be surprised at all. I bet the Thunderbird can hit at least 1.3GHz as it stands, probably more with a little tweaking. Once Mustang hits, we'll probably see speeds of 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6GHz.

AMD thinks they can keep up with Intel in the MHz wars. If this proves to be true, the P4 is dead in the water, if it's true that it's slower than the P3 clock for clock(Therefor, slower than the Athlon, and certainly slower than the Mustang).

Intel execs are probably furiously pulling their hair out. They're going to go bald soon, if this keeps up. ;)

The official Intel release date for the P4 has been Q4 2000 for some time now. That means sometime between 10/1 and 12/31. These dates in Oct., as well as for Nov., have not come from Intel.

From Link #1, we have this quote :

<< Intel will release the Pentium 4 on Oct. 30, according to sources close to the company-- >>

From Link #2, we have this :

<< Sources earlier said Intel planned on an Oct. 30 release date >>

The point being, this person called "Sources" really does get around, and is the originator of literally thousands of rumors and bits of misinformation over the years in the tech industry. :D

I don't understand what you're getting at, Midnight.

It's been known Intel planned on releasing in October. Now it's slipped to November. It's a slip, even if they said it would be "in Q4". The point is that with an October release, we had a chance of seeing P4 systems for christmas. Now that chance is rather slim. This is a big deal, since Q4 is traditionally the strongest consumer buying time.

AMD is probably celebrating as we speak ..

[sings]All I want for Christmas is a dually rig, a dually rig

Stock it up with a couple Palomines, some Palomines

Stick in some sticks of fancy DDR, that lovely DDR

Don't want no Intel, that's vaporware.

It's vaporware - I said vaporware.

Did you know that Intel has a new partner, a new partner.

Yes, Intel has joined up with Bit Boy-oys, Bit Boy-oys.[/sings]

Thank you, I'm here all week.

This delay is a good thing, my brand new P3 will be outdated 1 month later than I first thought ;)

More info:

It appears that the problem is not so much with the CPU, but with the i850 chipset.

It appears that Dell and Intel have found a problem with the chipset during transfer of data via AGP or when large amounts of memory bandwidth are needed.

Here's a link:

LOL .. So, basically, it's a problem with the QDR bus. Not very surprising, actually. Basically, it buckles when is strained hard.

*can't help but let out a chuckle*
